AN eight-man IRA unit wiped
out by the SAS after they
launched a bomb attack on
Loughgall nearly 25 years ago
opened fre frst on the under-
cover soldiers, it has been
claimed in a leaked report.
Responding to Sinn Fein
complaints about the killings,
Danny Kennedy MLA said it
was the IRA who operated a
shoot-to-kill policy. They did
not take prisoners unless
those individuals such as
Jean McConville were to be
murdered. See pages 6&7

A jury at Craigavon Crown

Fraudster guilty
of property scam
A Co Antrim businessman was unan-
imously convicted yesterday of an in-
ternational property scam.
The Belfast Crown Court jury of
seven men and fve women deliberat-
ed for just over fve hours during the
last two days before fnding 52-year-
old Kevin oKane unanimously guilty
of 25 charges of
obtaining money
and property by
deception.
oKane, an oil
and coal mer-
chant from Bal-
lyneese Road in
Portglenone, was
unanimously ac-
quitted of two
similar charges, as
well as one count
of using a false in-
strument, namely a set of fake prop-
erty deeds.
As the jury foreman repeated guilty
after guilty verdict, oKane remained
impassive in the dock.
Since the trial began almost three
months ago on September 16, the
court had heard that oKane duped
seven people into thinking they were
buying luxury villas in the sunshine
resort of Gumbet in Turkey and
that they handed over half-a-million
pounds between them.
oKane claimed in numerous meet-
ings in Northern Ireland and also on
site visits to Golden Beach Villas that he
was the landowner and developer but,
as one victim told the court, oKane
didnt own even a blade of grass.

Scottish visit puts
inequalities in focus
A MILK producer from the Waringstown area has told Farming Life of being left speechless during a recent trip to Scotland, after visits to three modern dairy farms highlighted what he says is an inequality in grants for farmers in Northern Ireland. I was part of a group of local milk producers who visited Agri- Scot a couple of weeks ago,
explained Charlie Weir. On our way to the venue we called in at three dairy farms in the Stranraer and Dumfries areas. One of the farmers had recently increased his cow numbers from 400 to 500, another was milking 600 cows in a purpose built unit, recently constructed on a green feld site, while the last herdowner was milking 1,200 cows. All three farmers had recently completed a signifcant capital development project on their unit.
In fact, the man with 600 cows is a new entrant into milk and had incurred a total spend in excess of 1 million. I was standing listening to the guys chatting while, at the same time, trying to work out if it would be feasible to invest on such a scale back home. And then came the bomb shell! The frst farmer volunteered that he had received substantial grant aid from the Scottish Executive to facilitate the full programme of work
undertaken, and this very same story was then repeated on the other two farms we visited. Everyone in my group was knocked for six on hearing this. It turns out that the Scottish Executive is actively supporting farm building projects with the clear aim of improving effciency levels within the milk sector and making the dairy industry in that region more ft for purpose. Irish sign is
bad faith
NATIoNALISTS on Belfast
City Council have been
accused of bypassing diversity
protocols they helped frame
in order to impose a Merry
Christmas sign in Irish for
the frst time in the councils
history.
Sinn Fein has succeeded
in having a motion passed
to install the sign, with
backing from the SDLP and
Alliance. However, unionists
walked out en masse, saying
that those behind the move
had deliberately bypassed a
special diversity committee
which all parties had formed
to deal with sensitive cultural
matters. See page 4
