“Unravelling the Mysteries of

Forgotten Structures”
“Standing alone amidst the landscape, weathered and worn,
stranded buildings tell tales of solitude and resilience, their
silent presence echoing the passage of time."
A Colony Ghosted by the Builder Itself
The Mhada Colony in Kurla West stands abandoned as the
construction work on this building has been on hold since
2016. Situated near Kohinoor Road, there are 28 towers
comprising 117 wings. Out of the only 12 are inhabited leaving
the rest in disarray. The builder was unable to clear his bank
loans taken for construction purposes. Cheques amounting to
₹15.84 crores bounced thrice, which eventually led the
government to halt the work. Eventually, the area, tagged as 'haunted,' has
become a hotspot for various crimes such as murders, rapes, and drug
exchanges. A significant portion of the area is wasted and is not utilized
properly. The primary cause appears to be the builder, who failed to meet his
financial commitments to the bank.

A Tiff that Led to Cessation

The Sagar Building in Bhiwandi became a victim of a professional tiff that led to
its decline. The work stopped around 2001 due to a disagreement between the
builder and the architect. When the friends turned foes. After the project
began, the disagreement led Mr. Kaleem to withdraw his investment. As a
result, Imran Khan faced a significant loss of funds since advance payments had
already been taken from buyers. Complaints were lodged against Imran Khan,
leading to his punishment. With insufficient funds, the work was stopped. In a
crowded and developing area, abandoned buildings have been repurposed by
local residents, leading to the development of illegal and informal settlements
around the structure.

A Bridge that Didn't Land and Stayed Stranded
The connecting bridge between Jogeshwari East Lokhandwala was never
materialized. The bridge was never completed and remains stranded, standing
as a testament to halted infrastructure urban development projects. This
obstruction by Millat school near Shastri Nagar, SV road forced the construction
of the JVLR bridge to divert citizens. Due to the government's negligence, the
bridge was planned to be constructed in close proximity to the school
premises. To prevent potential accidents, the school is pursuing legal action.
Despite the significant buildings in Jogeshwari, a basic footpath is missing, and
the lack of perfect roads failed to connect Jogeshwari East and Lokhandwala.
The government's negligence has caused daily hardships for Mumbaikars. The
incomplete bridge area was later used by laborers for shelter.

Builder or Rather a Cheater

Near Mahim West police station VIP road. Mr
Dharmendra Shukla presented a deal to Ms. Naziya
Qureshi, promising that she would own a flat upon
completion. However, after partial construction, the
builder sold the 12 Floor flats and fled, citing poor
access and water supply as excuses, which were
mere fabrications. The building has been abandoned for 16 years, leading to
haunted stories and no malpractices being heard. A famous bakery in the area
also suffered significant losses due to the drop in customers.

A Project That Revived

Burhani Heights is located in the heart of Mohammed Ali
Road. The project was almost complete but halted due to
the illegal construction of additional floors. The
halt affected the lifestyle of the Bori community
who invested in it. Despite the significant halt,
people around the building seemed indifferent as
the plot was situated in a busy street. It is
reported that the project will be taken down,

making way for a new one, causing further loss of resources and increased
pollution and traffic

Conclusion
In a city like Mumbai where the land is scarce, the government should
prioritize utilising these abandoned plots effectively. To avoid such wastage
of space only reliable builders should be allowed to practice.
