Post-writing
Pre-writing
• Understand the task or the prompt.
• Plan the essay.

Two pre-writing activities:

• Brainstorming
• Outlining
Pre-writing #1 Brainstorming
• This is a strategy to generate ideas.
• Write down all your ideas, without worrying about grammar or spelling.
• Quantity over quality.
Pre-writing #2 Outlining
• After generating ideas, the next step is to select and organize them.
• How are you going to structure your essay? (e.g., chronological, order
of importance, cause and effect)
• Create your thesis statement, mentioning key points and organization
of your essay.
“An outline should help the writer to
answer the question as effectively as
possible.
Care at this stage will save wasted
effort later.”
(Bailey, 2018)
Writing
• Follow the outline.
• Craft a variety of sentence structures.
• Mind grammar and vocabulary.
• Maintain unity and coherence.
Post-Writing
• Proofreading and editing.
• Have you answered the task well?
