Odd Ones Out

What are Odd Ones Out?

In Odd Ones Out questions you are given a group of five words. You need

to work out which two are the odd ones out

All of the words, except for two, will be connected: they form a group

The odd ones out are the words that cannot join the group because they

do not share the same connection that links the words in the group.

Example

Three of the five words are related in some way.

Choose the two words that do not go with these three.

trout salmon rose stood peach

Let’s test some connections!

1
Word Class: Are the words nouns, verbs,

adjectives or adverbs? Are any of the words in a

different word class to the others?

‘Trout’, ‘salmon’ and ‘peach’ are nouns. ‘Rose’ could

be a verb or noun. There is no clear group. Let’s

explore other connections!

Odd Ones Out

2 Synonym: Do any of the words have

the same meaning?

‘Rose’ and ‘stood’ are synonyms but that is only

two words so this cannot be the connection.

3 Category: Are any of the words the

same type of thing?

‘Salmon’ and ‘trout’ are both fish, but that is only two
words. ‘Salmon’, ‘rose’’ and ‘peach’ are all different
shades of pink.

4 Answer: The connection between the group of three words

is that they are all different shades of pink, so the odd ones
out are: ‘trout’ and ‘stood’!
