Learning Outcome:
Upon completion of the subject students will understand history and need of Metro System along with its
operation and management.
Theory syllabus
Unit Content Hrs
1. General:
Overview of Metro Systems, Need for Metros, Routing Studies, Basic Planning and 4
Financials.
2. Overview and Construction Methods:
Elevated and Underground Stations, Viaduct Spans and Bridges, Underground Tunnels, 4
Depots, Commercial and Service Buildings, Initial Surveys and Investigations.
3. Basics of Construction Planning:
Construction Quality and Safety Systems, Traffic Integration, Multimodal transfers and 5
Pedestrian facilities, Environmental and social safeguards, Track system-permanent way.
4. Electronics and Communication Engineering:
Signaling and Control for Railway, Signaling system; Automatic fare collection, Operation 6
Control Centre (OCC & BCC), SCADA and other control systems, Platform Screen Doors.
5. Metro Telecommunication:
Rolling stocks, vehicles dynamics and structure, Tunnel ventilation system, Air-conditioning 4
for stations and buildings, Fire control systems, Lifts and Escalators.
6. Electrical:
OHE, Traction Power, Substation – TSS and ASS, Power SCADA, Standby and Back-up 5
systems, Green buildings, Carbon credits and clear air mechanics.
7. Operation and Management:
Metro operation and general rules, Procurement and contract management, Legal issue and 4
funding for Rail Transit, Transit oriented development.
