1.ELECTRICITY AND CIRCUITS
2.FUN WITH MAGNETS
2. It is said that, there was a shepherd named Magnes, who lived in ancient
Greece. He used to take his herd of sheep and goats to the nearby mountains
for grazing. He would take a stick with him to control his herd. The stick had
a small piece of iron attached at one end. One day he was surprised to find
that he had to pull hard to free his stick from a rock on the mountainside. It
seemed as if the stick was being attracted by the rock. The rock was a natural
magnet and it attracted the iron tip of the shepherd's stick. It is said that
this is how natural magnets were discovered. Such rocks were given the name
magnetite, perhaps after the name of that shepherd. Magnetite contains iron.
Some people believe that magnetite was first discovered at a place called
Magnesia. The substances having the property of attracting iron are now
known as magnets.
a) If the north pole of the magnet is towards the front in car A and in car B it is
towards the back. Do the cars remain at their places?
b) If north poles of the magnets are towards the front then what will happen?
c) There are no markings on a bar magnet to differentiate north pole and south
pole. What is the best method to identify the poles of a bar magnet?
4. Arjun has set up an electric circuit using some connecting copper wires, a
battery, a switch and a bulb that he has taken from a torch light. But after
connecting the equipment, the bulb is not glowing.
a) What can be the reasons for this?
b) Why are copper and aluminium wires used as connecting wires?
c) What is the role of battery in the circuit?
d) What do you mean by an electric circuit? Draw the circuit diagram
for a circuit having three cells, one bulb and a switch.
5. A switch is a simple device that either breaks or completes the circuit. The
switches used in lighting of electric bulbs and other devices in homes works
on the same principle although their designs are more complex.
a) Why is Bakelite used for making electrical switches?
b) Name some electrical gadgets that have switches built into them.
c) What is the role of switch in an electric circuit?
d) You are provided with a bulb, a cell, two wires, a switch. Draw a circuit
diagram to show a complete circuit.
