1 INTRODUCTION
The following document outlines the essential general requirements encompassing design,
materials, fabrication, inspection, testing, and delivery of the Piping Material intended for Bandar
Imam Petrochemical Company (BIPC) Chlor-Alkali plant, the (CA1 PLANT).
2 PURPOSE
This document outlines the Piping Material Specification and is to be utilized as a part of the
Inquiry Package/Material Requisition.
3 SCOPE
This document defines the minimum requirements for the material, design, manufacturing,
erection, inspection, and testing of Piping Material.

6 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
6.1 Materials (Carbon Steel & Stainless Steel)
Engineering requirements for the design of the piping system shall comply with ASME B31.3
and relevant codes and standards.
Piping materials are specified in the individual Piping Material Classes detailed in PIPING
CLASSES SUMMARY. Additional material selections can be made for special items as per the
P&ID during detailed engineering.
6.2 Piping Components

Wall thicknesses of pipes and piping components are calculated according to ASME B31.3 and
relevant codes and standards.
The following pipe sizes should not be utilized, unless necessitated by equipment connections:
1 ¼”, 2 ½”, 3 ½”, 5”, 7”, 9”, 22”, 26”, 30”, 34”, 38”, 42”, and 46”.
Stainless steel pipes and fittings shall be provided in heat-treated conditions and devoid of cold
work.
Threads for threaded pipes, fittings, flanges, and valves shall adhere to ASME B1.20.1 taper
ends.
6.2.1 Pipes
The following specifications outline the requirements and standards for the design and
construction of the piping system:
• Specifications for Piping Material - Pipe can be found in CA1-BD-0-000-000-PI-SPC-
0016.
• Pipe dimensions shall comply with ASME B36.10M for welded and seamless wrought
steel pipes and ASME B36.19M for stainless steel pipes.
• Dimensions for Non-metallic Pipes shall adhere to DIN-16965 and Manufacturer
Standards.
• Pipes made by the acid-bessemer process are not acceptable. Steel pipes shall be
manufactured by the open hearth, electric furnace, or basic oxygen process.
• All pipe threads shall conform to the American standard taper as per ASME B1.20.1
unless otherwise specified.

• Butt-welding ends shall conform to ASME B16.25.

• Branch connections shall not intersect the longitudinal weld of the pipe run.
• Threaded pipe nipples in piping classes, where S.W fittings are specified, may be used,
but carbon steel nipples shall be one schedule higher than specified in the class.
• The basis of Corrosion Allowance will be the Material Selection Diagram (Doc. No. CA1-
BD-1-000-000-PR-MFD-0001 & CA1-BD-2-000-000-PR-MFD-0001).
• Nipples should be seamless, and their length should be 100 mm unless otherwise stated.
• For non-metallic pipes, the wall thickness is specified as per DIN16965.
• Fiberglass pipes shall be provided in sizes shown in DIN 16965 and API 15LR.
• The thickness of the inside liner shall be in accordance with DIN 16965-PART 2 as a
minimum. However, the final thickness of the inside liner will be defined by the VENDOR.
6.2.2 Flanges

• Flanges shall be in accordance with the following codes:
o Up to 24” Size: ASME B 16.5
o Above 24” Size: ASME B 16.47 series ‘B’
• Steel flange faces shall have serration (concentric or spiral) 250 to 500 AARH as per
MSS-SP-6 unless otherwise noted. The smooth face finish for the raised face shall be
125 micro inch AARH.
• Butt-welding ends of weld neck flanges shall conform to ASME 16.25 & bore of socket
weld flanges shall suit pipe O.D and its thickness.
• Threads for screwed flanges shall conform to American standard taper as per ASME
B1.20.1 unless otherwise stated.
• The bolt holes of flanges shall straddle the vertical centre line for horizontal piping and
shall straddle the plant north-south line for vertical piping.

B16.5 and sizes 26” and above shall be as per AWWA C207 (where specified).
• Spiral Wound gaskets shall conform to API 601, for sizes up to 24” as per ASME B16.5 to
ASME B16.47 series ‘B’ for sizes 26” and above.
• All gaskets not standardized by ASME or API shall be in accordance with the
