TASK 1 - PRACTICAL

GROWING BREAD MOULD (THE FUNGUS RHIZOPUS) ON BREAD


MARKS: 30 TIME: 1 WEEK

Materials and Methods


▪ Slice of bread
▪ Plastic bag
▪ Water
▪ Dark cupboard

Instructions
☺ Put a few drops of water (do not soak) on a slice of bread
☺ Put the slice of bread in a plastic bag and seal it (or other container)
☺ Put the plastic bag with the bread in a dark, warm cupboard for 2-3 days

Results (Use your textbook to help you identify the structures)

1 Write down what you see on the bread? 1

2 Smell the bread – what does it smell like? 1

3 Use the magnifying glass (hand lens) and answer these questions

3.1 What is the colour of the mass of growth (threads)? 1


3.2 What are the threads called? 1
3.3 Do you think these threads contain chlorophyll? 1
3.4 How many types of thread can you identify? 1
3.5 Describe the position of each type of threads 3
3.6 Suggest the functions of each of these threads 3
3.7 Describe the tip of the threads which grow upwards 2

4 Would you describe the mould as being autotrophic, saprophytic or parasitic? 1

5 Explain your answer 2

6 Make a fully labelled diagram of your bread and the mould (IDENTIFY THE MYCELIUM, 8
STOLONS, RHIZOIDS, SPORANGIOPHORES, SPORANGIA, SPORES)

7 In point form, describe the structure of the bread mould (Rhizopus sp.) 4
