1. Do any paragraphs seem like they develop more than one idea?

2. Is the function of each paragraph clear—its role in the broader development of an

argument or story?

3. Is there sufficient evidence (whether textual, factual, or reasons) in each paragraph to

support its broader claims?
4. Is the main point of each paragraph sufficiently developed? Could it use more detail?
More evidence? Clarification? Consideration of alternative formulations?

5. Does the internal sequence of sentences ‘flow’? Or are there moments of pause or break?

6. How do the paragraphs end? Do they anticipate the next paragraph? Do they move out
into a zone of abstraction? Do they repeat the main idea? Might there be a better way to
end them?
