About てしまう・ちゃう
しま
By combining the conjunction particle て, with the verb しまう (sometimes written as 終う), you are
able to express that something was done 'by accident', 'completely', or 'unfortunately'. These
meanings may seem quite different, but we will discuss their similarities in a moment. Let's look at a
few examples of てしまう first.
わたし みち まよ
 私 はすぐに 道 に 迷 ってしまう。
Unfortunately, I easily get lost.
いえ か し ぜんぶ た か し か
 家 にお菓子がいっぱいあると全部 食べてしまうのでお菓子を買わないように
している。
When there are a lot of snacks in my house, I completely eat them all, so I try not to
buy them.
たの
 メニューにアイスクリームがあると 頼 んでしまう。
When there is ice-cream on the menu, I unfortunately order it.
わたし した か
 私 はよく 舌 を噛んでしまう。
I accidentally bite my tongue often.
As we can see, verbs that usually take で instead of て will be no different when using てしまう.
Sometimes, てしまう or でしまう will be shortened to a more casual form, which are often used in
speech. These forms are as follows:
てしまう will become ちゃう
でしまう will become じゃう
さいきん うんどう ふと
最 近 運 動をしてないから 太 っちゃう。
Recently, I haven't been exercising, so I'm totally going to get fat.
はな はな ふ
 花 がんじゃうから、 花 を踏むな。
Since the flowers will unfortunately die, don't step on them.
Fun Fact

While てう is most frequently written in hiragana, てう may also be seen. There is a slight nuance
difference between these two kanji structures, but the primary meaning of しまう will always be that
'something has come to the point where ending/ending up in a specific state cannot be avoided'. This
し ま
'no turning back point' may be temporary (likely to be written as 仕舞う), or it may be permanent
しま
(likely to be written as 終う).
Due to this 'cannot be avoided' nuance, しまう often comes across as 'totally', as in 'ah… I totally left
the chicken in the oven for too long'. In these cases, it is simply expressing the speaker's exasperation
that something is 'too late' to change. However, despite regularly being used negatively, てしまう can
also be used positively. In these cases it still has the nuance of 'no turning back'.

Learn Japanese grammar: てしまう (te shimau) & ちゃう (chau). Meaning: to do something
by accident, to finish completely.

This may in some cases also express regret, but not always.

てしまう (te shimau)

This is the standard version:

 てしまう = to do by accident / to finish

 てしまった = did by accident / finished
 てしまいました = did by accident / finished (more formal)

ちゃう/じゃう (chau / jau)

This is the more casual version, which instead uses a verb’s stem form:

 ちゃう = to do by accident / to finish (casual)

 ちゃった = did by accident / finished (casual)

NOTE: If the verb’s dictionary form ends with ぶ (bu) , む (mu) , ぬ (nu) or ぐ (gu), it
becomes じゃう (jau) or じゃった (jatta).

 じゃう = to do by accident / to finish (casual)

  じゃった = did by accident / finished (casual)

After you’ve faced the worst, you can’t ever really fear anything again.
saiaku no jitai o keiken suru to, nanika o kokoro kara osoreru to iu koto ga nakunatte
shimau.

いったい誰がこの致命的な秘密をあの子に知らせてしまったのか、私どもにはわか
りませんでした。
We never knew who had revealed this fatal secret to that child.
ittai dare ga kono chimeiteki na himitsu o ano ko ni shirasete shimatta no ka,
watashidomo ni wa wakarimasen deshita.

私はそういう人物を見ると、美化してしまう傾向があります。
I look at a person like that and I have a tendency to idealize them.

Some reporter shot the last scene with a long-distance camera so the ending was
spoiled. We even had to stay up all night filming, but the article was published before
it was broadcasted. I was so disappointed.

verb て form

しまう

has two related but slightly different meanings.

The first is to 'complete' or 'bring to a close' something, with an

implication that some determination or effort was required. For
example:

The second is to refer to a situation where something unfortunate or
