Abstract: The impact and health outcomes of each war or era present differently in
each veteran and are unpredictable in timing of presentation. Civilian providers
may not be well versed in taking a military history, the unique approach
recommended for interacting with veteran patients, and the specific health
implications of each military era. This article describes the unique attributes of
veteran clients. Two recent military eras are discussed, and their potential impact
on health is presented using case examples. Resources for practice with patients
who have served in the military are presented.
