What is Commercial Interior Design?

Commercial Interior Design involves public spaces—government buildings, private

businesses, or other corporate entities.

Offices, Banks, Retail Establishments and other public spaces.

Corporate Identity

• Proper office design is critical in communicating an organizations desired

corporate image. The corporate image/ branding must be maintained
throughout the design.
• All offices should convince those who visit them that the organization they
house is reputable, and they should persuade potential employees that they
would be happy to share the culture and ethos of their employer.
• Organizations need to provide an environment in which employees can
happily and healthily spend half their waking hours.

Types of Office Layouts

• Open Office Layout: saves space by getting rid of partitions and enclosed
rooms. Creates collaborative and creatively engaging workspace
environment. Examples: cubicles, half partitions, team enclosures, large open
space
• Closed Office Layout: walls separating the rooms of each worker providing
much more privacy.
• Hybrid Office Layout: combination of open and closed office layouts.
Provides certain functions with privacy and others with openness.

Acoustics
• Acoustics deals with the production, control, transmission, reception, and
effects of sound. In interior design, we are concerned with the control of
sound in interior spaces. More specifically, we want to preserve and enhance
desired sounds and reduce or eliminate sounds that would interfere with our
activities.
• When a sound wave strikes an object, it is either absorbed or reflected, or a
combination of the two.
• An acoustical engineer can determine the acoustical requirements for a
space. The interior designer should be aware of how the selection and
disposition of reflective and absorbent materials affect the acoustical
qualities of a room

Acoustical Planning

• Good architectural acoustics begin with concepts of zoning and isolation,

followed later by insulation and absorption.
• The planning process for acoustics begins with the initial space planning. When
organizing user and spatial needs, as in the development of a criteria matrix,
acoustic needs for privacy, isolation, and absorption should be identified.
• Wherever possible, acoustic conflicts or problems should first be addressed through
appropriate and sensitive space allocation. Despite this, many acoustic conflicts
cannot be easily resolved through space planning; and must be dealt with through
means other than zoning and isolation. For example, creating buffer spaces and
zones.

Accessibility

• Although all aspects of planning for people with disabilities are important, in
space planning terms the controlling dimensional factor is wheelchair operation.
It is an extremely valuable practice to place oneself in the position of a
wheelchair bound person moving through and using the spaces that are created,
from the major travel and egress routes down to the details of entering rooms or
spaces and negotiating one’s way through furniture and partition panels. Gaining
a personal sensitivity to the potential problems faced by disabled users goes a
long way in creating interior spaces that will satisfy all users.

Office Dimensional Requirements

• Its important as you are designing to be aware of the dimensional

requirements for office spaces and apply them correctly. This will help you
achieve not only a functional and coherent layout but also an ergonomic one.
• Organizations need to provide an environment in which employees can
happily and healthily spend half their waking hours.

Conference/ Meeting Rooms
• Areas/ spaces where people gather to discuss and present ideas.
• Designs vary depending on the nature of the office and meetings.
• For example: some companies prefer to have their meeting rooms in a more
central and open design to allow creativity, openness, and ease. Whereas other
companies would prefer enclosing the meeting room and separating it away from
other activities.
• It all goes back to the client and nature of the office.

Reception

• Proper design of the reception area is critical in communicating an

organizations desired corporate image. Reception spaces are both the first and
last areas the visitor interacts with, and, accordingly, have considerable visual
impact in communicating that image.
• Not only must the reception space look attractive, but it must function
properly as well. The two most important planning elements in this regard
are the visitor’s seating area and the receptionists workstation or desk.

Office Storage Units

• Back storage units or credenzas are designed for storing documents,

supporting equipment, and displaying work in progress. They eliminate
clutter on the desk by containing box drawers, file drawers, doors with
shelves, pull out equipment shelves, or bar units. Filing systems should be
selected for the client’s filing needs, space availability, and quality of work
man-ship.
• Vertical files have two to five drawers, usually 15 or 18inches (381 or 457 mm)
wide, and 18 to 29 inches (457mm to 736 mm) deep.
• Lateral files are two to five drawers high and are usually30, 36, or 42 inches
(762, 914, or 1067 mm) wide and 15or 18 inches (381 mm or 457 mm) deep
