MID-TERM EXAM QUESTIONS – 2021.2

Course: Probability and Statistics (MI2026). Time: 60 minutes

Question 1 (2.0 points) Three machines I, II, and III manufacture 20%, 30%,
and 50%, respectively of the total output of certain items. Of them, 3%, 4%, and 5%,
respectively, are defective. One item is drawn at random from the total output and is
tested.
(a) What is the probability that the item is non-defective?
(b) If it is found to be defective, what is the probability the item was produced by
machine II?

Question 2 (3.0 points) When a signal is transmitted from location A, the proba-
bility that the signal will be received by location B is 60%. Location A transmits the
signal n times. Assuming all transmissions are independent.
(a) Assume n = 3. Let X be the number of times that the location B receives the
signal. What is the expected value of X?
(b) What is the minimum value of n that produces a probability of at least 0.95 of
receiving the signal at least once?

Question 3 (2.5 points) The continuous random variable X has probability density
function (
k(20 − x), 0 < x < 20,
fX (x) =
0, otherwise.
Define the random variable Y by Y = min{X, 10}.
(a) Find k?
(b) Find the cumulative distribution function of Y .

Question 4 (2.5 points) Suppose the number of customers, arriving at an electronic

shop is modeled as a Poisson process with mean arrival rate 6 customers per day.
(a) What is the probability that there are more than five customers in a day?
(b) What is the probability that during a month (30 days), there are less than 2 days
in which there are 3 customers each day?
