3. REARRANGING THE PARTS D–49
As the name suggests, it simply asks the student/test-taker to arrange the given
parts to form a meaningful sentence. In this type of questions, some parts of the
given sentence are jumbled up. These parts are generally labelled P, Q, R, S.
After the jumbled parts, four sequences/options are provided. The student is
required to rearrange the jumbled parts of the sentence and select the correct
sequence/option.
Here are some useful tips that can be used to crack these questions:
zz Read the jumbled parts with proper focus at least twice. It will help you to
identify the theme of the sentence and thus, it will be easier to arrange the
parts afterwards.
zz Sometimes, the first fact is constant, this makes it easy to identify the
sequence of the parts. In case, there is no starting part, the student has to
identify the first part. Elimination method can also be opted by removing
the wrong choices and from the remaining parts, the correct one is chosen.
zz Try linking the given terms such as, then, and, yet, but, anyway, when and
soon.

15 : GEETA’s Best In English (Core) XII (2024) CUET Matter

zz Connect one sentence to another, connecting the dots will help to arrange
the parts easily.
zz After rearranging the parts, reread the sentence to confirm that it is logically
accurate.

How To Write a Good Sentence

It is equally important to know how Subject and Predicate can help you to write
a correct and meaningful sentence as we know that the subject of a complete
sentence is specifically who or what the sentence is about while the predicate tells
us something about the subject. Have a look at the following examples and test
yourself if you can find the subjects and predicates.
At the cinema with family and eating snacks with lot of butter and salt.
The swiftly approaching train on the rickety tracks, shivering as it rounded the
curve.
Both the examples have action, and both are saying something about the
nouns, but neither one is an actual sentence because none of them has a Subject
and a Predicate. Let us rewrite the examples and create complete sentences.

16 : GEETA’s Best In English (Core) XII (2024) CUET Matter

1. While we were at the cinema, my family and I were eating snacks with lots
of butler and salt.
Now we can find the verb, “were eating,” and ask “who?” The answer is a
compound subject, “my family and I.”
2. The swiftly approaching train swerved on the rickety tracks, shivering as it
rounded the curve.
Or
The swiftly approaching train shivered as it rounded the curve on the rickety
tracks.
Both rewrites of this example now included a verb, “swerved” or “shivered,”
with “train” as the same subject in each version.

Antonyms
A word that has the exact opposite meaning of another word is its antonym. Thus,
antonyms are the words that have opposite meaning. They play an important role in
writing by making your words more effective. Placing opposites together highlights
their differences and makes the individual words more effective.
Antonyms are useful for comparing two different things and drawing attention
to what makes them different. In some cases, the best way to describe something
is to explain what it is not. Using antonyms can add new dimensions to the speech
or writing.
Antithesis, a literary device, directly uses the power of antonyms by employing
them, next to or near to each other to make the writing more effective and interesting.
