A SECOND OFFICER, must be competent in the following (competency evaluation):

Assist the Chief Officer, to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.
Work safely and fully comply with Master’s standing orders.
Perform passage planning.
Maintain charts and nautical publications.
Maintain controlled publications, regulations and guidelines.
Keep a safe navigational watch.
Assist the Chief Officer in keeping watch during cargo operations.
Notify the Master and/or Chief Officer of any defects that may affect the vessel’s safety
or put at risk the marine environment.
Report any incident to the Master or Chief Officer.
Maintain all documents and files as assigned to him by the Master and/or Chief Officer.
Trim and stability
Ship manoeuvring, handling and all company instructions ‘deck’
Operation of heat and smoke detection unit

A THIRD OFFICER, in order to be promoted to SECOND OFFICER must show competence in


the above (promotion evaluation) and have at least 12 months seatime.
