Ricardo Ramirez

Professor Ricardo Ramírez began in the educational field teaching reading. He


dedicated the most fruitful years of his long existence to teaching as a teacher of
geography, mathematics and natural sciences. At the end of his life he dedicated
himself with emphasis to the study and research of the geology and paleontology
of the country, standing out nationally as one of the most advanced in the area, so
his field and office research still Today they are notable and basic.

He was one of the main propagators of the ideas and rationalist method
established in the country by the teacher Eugenio María de Hostos, of whom he
was one of the most notable disciples in the Cibao region. Other branches of
knowledge did not escape their concerns, distinguishing themselves for their
culture. He was a lover of celebrating floral games, sympathy queens and school
contests. In addition to being an educator, he held other positions. He belonged to
important national and foreign scientific institutions.

Ricardo Ramírez was born on October 9, 1885 in the Municipal Section of San
José, near Baitoa, and a few years later his parents, Don Lisandro Ramírez and
Doña Cipriana Núñez, took up residence in Santiago de los Caballeros, where he
completed his primary studies.

His training was supported by the wise guidance of the educator, journalist, writer
and politician Mr. Manuel de Jesús de Peña y Reynoso, first at the Central School
and later at the Normal School, where the young Ramírez obtained his title as a
Secondary School Teacher. , with notes by Benemérito, on December 23, 1906.

A few months later, the young Ramírez, 21 years old and recently graduated under
the Curriculum created by the illustrious educator Mr. Eugenio María de Hostos,
was appointed Professor of said school.

Eugenio de Jesús Marcano Fondeur


Eugenio De Jesús Marcano Fondeur (1923-2003), born in Licey al Medio, Santiago
de los Caballeros, was a Dominican botanist, entomologist, herpetologist,
speleologist and researcher.
He ventured into malacology, geology, botanical toxicology and paleontology
where he made significant contributions to the natural sciences. He is recognized
as one of the natural science researchers with the greatest contributions on the
Island of Santo Domingo and his few formal studies make him an example of
tenacity and commitment due to his self-taught skills.
Together with Father Julio Cicero, he formed a couple of researchers who
promoted biological and ecological research and the teaching of these sciences in
the Dominican Republic. Then, the researcher Idelisa Bonelly, dedicating herself to
the field of marine biology, caused the School of Biology to be created in 1968 at
the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, UASD.
