Red Cell Indices
Red Cell Indices
These are parameters that provide information about the size and hemoglobin content of
red blood cells.
Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV): Average volume or size of red blood cells. Normal
range is around 80 to 100 femtoliters (fL).
Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH): Average amount of hemoglobin per red blood
cell. Normal range is about 27 to 33 picograms (pg).
Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC): Average concentration of
hemoglobin in red blood cells. Normal range is approximately 32% to 36%.
Notes
Definition: MCV measures the average volume or size of red blood cells (RBCs).
Macrocytic anemia: MCV > 100 fL (e.g., vitamin B12 or folate deficiency).
Definition: MCH measures the average amount of hemoglobin per red blood cell (RBC).
Significance: MCH helps assess the hemoglobin content per RBC, aiding in the diagnosis of
various anemias.
