 Red Cell Indices:

 These are parameters that provide information about the size and hemoglobin content of
red blood cells.
 Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV): Average volume or size of red blood cells. Normal
range is around 80 to 100 femtoliters (fL).
 Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH): Average amount of hemoglobin per red blood
cell. Normal range is about 27 to 33 picograms (pg).
 Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC): Average concentration of
hemoglobin in red blood cells. Normal range is approximately 32% to 36%.

 Notes

Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV):

Definition: MCV measures the average volume or size of red blood cells (RBCs).

Measurement and Normal Range: Normal range is approximately 80 to 100 femtoliters

(fL).

Significance: MCV helps classify anemia types:

Microcytic anemia: MCV < 80 fL (e.g., iron deficiency).

Normocytic anemia: MCV within normal range (e.g., chronic disease).

Macrocytic anemia: MCV > 100 fL (e.g., vitamin B12 or folate deficiency).

Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH):

Definition: MCH measures the average amount of hemoglobin per red blood cell (RBC).

Measurement and Normal Range: Normal range is approximately 27 to 33 picograms (pg).

Significance: MCH helps assess the hemoglobin content per RBC, aiding in the diagnosis of
various anemias.

Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC):

Definition: MCHC measures the average concentration of hemoglobin in a given volume of

packed red blood cells.

Measurement and Normal Range: Normal range is approximately 32% to 36%.

Significance: MCHC helps evaluate the hemoglobin concentration relative to the size of red
blood cells, providing insights into anemia types.
