Geometry Honors - 3A

Vocabulary:

Transformation: “Ways to manipulate the shape and/or position of a point, a line, or geometric figure.”

Isometry: Transformation which preserves distance, midpoint, angle measure, and area. - Rigid Motion

Constructions:

Constructing the line of reflection:

1. Connect two corresponding points to each other; EX; A and A’
2. Find the perpendicular bisector of the drawn line between the corresponding points
3. Repeat steps 1-2 for another pair of corresponding points
4. If the perpendicular bisector of each construction aligns the line of reflection is constructed

Constructing a reflected image:

1. Find the 2 points of intersection from 1 of the pre-image points
2. Find the 2 points of intersection from the two previous intersections
3. Repeat steps 1-2 for the additional pre-image point
4. Construct a line connecting the 2 FINAL POINTS

Rules:

Reflection of X or Y Axis:
1. X Axis; 𝑟𝑥−𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠 = (𝑥, − 𝑦)
a. EX; (2, − 3) → (2, 3)
b. EQUATION EX; 𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 3 → (− 𝑦) = 2𝑥 + 3 → 𝑦 = (− 2𝑥 − 3)
2. Y Axis; 𝑟𝑦−𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠 = (− 𝑥, 𝑦)
a. EX; (2, − 3) → (− 2, − 3)
b. EQUATION EX; 𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 3 → 𝑦 =− 2𝑥 + 3

Reflecting over Vertical or Horizontal Lines:

1. X Axis (Vertical Lines); Change X by the distance between line of reflection and X Coordinate
a. EX; (2, − 3) − 𝑟𝑥=3 → (4. − 3)
2. Y Axis (Horizontal Lines); Change Y by the distance between line of reflection and Y Coordinate
a. EX; (2, − 3) − 𝑟𝑦=3 → (2, 9)

(Reflections of:) Y = X & Y= -X

1. 𝑦 = 𝑥; 𝑟𝑦=𝑥 → (𝑦, 𝑥)
a. EX; (2, 3) 𝑟𝑦=𝑥 → (3, 2)
1 1
b. EQUATION EX; 𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 1 → (𝑥) = 3(𝑦) − 1 → 𝑦 = 3
𝑥+ 3
2. 𝑦 = (− 𝑥); 𝑟𝑦=−𝑥 → (− 𝑦, − 𝑥)
a. EX; (2, 3) 𝑟𝑦=−𝑥 → (− 3, − 2)
1 1
b. EQUATION EX; 𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 1 → (− 𝑥) = 3(− 𝑦) − 1 → 𝑦 = 3
𝑥− 3
