Territorial consequences
□ After the war, the territorial and economic
situation changed for the countries in conflict.
□ The territories of Antofagasta and Tarapacá,
which belonged to Bolivia and Peru, remained
in the hands of Chile.
□ Peru loses areas rich in saltpeter, a mineral
that would constitute its main resource
income.
□ Bolivia loses its access to the sea, in addition
to the areas with the presence of saltpeter.

Consequences for Chile
□ Chile manages to establish itself as
one of the main military powers in
the region.
□ It increases by more than 190,000
km2. the Chilean territory.
□ Between 1879 and 1889, saltpeter
exports increased by 70%,
increasing the country's income.
A new way of life is established in
□ the desert, with the installation of
important nitrate offices.
Consequences for Chile
□ The importance of Chilean
ports in the Pacific is
expanded, with the
annexation of Antofagasta,
Iquique and Arica.
□ As a result of customs
revenues from exports,
public works increased
