Bluetooth System Architecture
Bluetooth System Architecture
The Bluetooth protocol stack can be divided into two components: the host and
the Bluetooth controller (or radio module). The Host Controller Interface (HCI)
provides a standard interface between the host and the Bluetooth controller.
The host is also known as the high layer of the protocol stack and is usually
implemented in software. It is generally integrated with the system software or
operating system of the device. Profiles are built on top of protocols, usually in
software. The radio module or Bluetooth controller is normally a hardware
module, such as a PC card connected to the device in question, although it is
normal for this module to be already integrated into the device's hardware.
The higher layers can make use of the radio module through the HCI interface.
In turn, the radio module interacts with the host system through a standard
input/output system, such as PCMCIA, UART, or USB. Although in reality the
host and controller are implemented in most devices together and it is not
necessary to use HCI.
File transfer: The service consists of the transfer of .doc, .xls, .ppt, .wav,
and .jpg files, folders and directories from one device to another. It also
offers the possibility of viewing the contents of remote device folders.
Wireless Desktop: Bluetooth offers us the possibility of eliminating the
cables that we use in our computers: From a wireless keyboard, using
the mouse, even a portable hard drive that communicates using this
technology.
Internet Connection: This application allows wireless connection, a user
has access to the Internet through a mobile phone or through a wireless
modem, just as if it were a landline telephone line.
Wireless LAN Access: In this service, multiple data terminal equipment
use LAN access points, called LAP (LAN access point), as a wireless
connection to a LAN local area network. Once connected, the DTs
function as if they were connected to a LAN via a network.
Automatic Synchronization: The service consists of automatically and
continuously synchronizing the PIM (Personal Information Management)
information on the different Bluetooth devices; Basically the information
is related to the calendar, list of addresses and telephone numbers,
messages and notes.
Three-in-one telephone: The same telephone can be used as a landline,
if it is within the range of the installed access point, as a mobile phone if
we are outside the range of action of the access point, and finally, as
means of access to our contacts, telephone numbers, email, etc.
Wireless Hands-Free Device: The hands-free device can be connected
wirelessly to the mobile phone, laptop or other mobile phone, in order to
act as a remote device with audio input and output. As you can see,
Bluetooth applications are almost endless and allow you to radically
change the way users interact with mobile phones and other devices.
One of the first companies to launch a Bluetooth product was Ericsson.
