Caricature is a figure in which the appearance of a person is

deformed.
person. The word caricature is of Italian origin “caricare” which means “to load” or “to exaggerate”.
Caricature was born in Bologna at the end of the 16th century, in the art school founded by a family of painters, the
Carracci. The students portrayed the visitors in the guise of animals or inanimate objects.

The characteristics of a caricature are:

• A portrait or humorous representation that exaggerates or simplifies the physical and facial features or behavior
or manners of the individual, likewise, the activity carried out by a person can be the object of the caricature.
• The caricature can be seen as a work of art in which a person, situation, institution or thing is ridiculed, as seen
with political, social or religious caricatures that have a satirical purpose and not so much humor.

The purpose of the caricature is to incite political and social changes since, as is often said, many truths are usually
told under the comic figure. The caricatures are spread in newspapers, magazines and the Internet.

Political cartoon: The political cartoon was born in France. The political caricature aims to ridicule national or
international figures in political life in order to highlight their errors. Normally
caricatures reflect the opinion of the cartoonists but also the historical reality
through which a country is living.
In reference to the texts in political cartoons, they are of little use, although
sometimes human caricatures are observed with a dialogue box above their heads
showing a message full of sarcasm.
Social caricature: The social caricature, as its name indicates, reflects a
society in terms of criticism or ridicule.

Literary caricature: Literary caricature is

identified as those that are made only with
words, it is a type of description in which the
physical features and character of the
character are deformed or exaggerated, such is
the case of the works of Cervantes.

The symbolic caricature: This type of caricature represents a specific object that within a special context acquires a
strong social political charge.

The festive caricature: It is that type of happy and carefree caricature that only seeks comedy as its goal, using the
caricature of people or other contemporary objects.

The fantastic caricature: As indicated (Baudelaire 1968: p.14)” It is one that resorts to the fantastic in order to be
able to reflect an idea.

Themes taken into account in the cartoon:

• Well-known characters
• Social customs and moral corruption
• Political decisions
• Middle and upper class social life
• International events of the time
• Criticism of the religious, political and social injustices of the time

Steps to follow to make a caricature

The steps we must follow to create or make caricatures of people, photos or even your own caricature are: Distinguish
the most characteristic features of the person we are going to draw. These features can be: eyes, lips, nose, ear, hair,
dark circles, eyelashes, eyebrows, etc. - After having identified its most characteristic features, we exaggerate them
on paper, making it stand out from the others.
You start by making the face with the features already exaggerated. We will take into account that the head has to
be larger than the body and limbs.
When the face is already drawn, we will only have the part of the body left, which is the easiest area of the entire
caricature. It is drawn without highlighting anything, since the most important thing is the face of the caricature.
Some advices:

• Make the caricature guided by a previous drawing, which should have a faint line so that it can be erased after
having drawn the final caricature.
• Pay close attention to its most important features and highlight them in the drawing by making them twice as large
as the other features.
• Be patient and don't get overwhelmed.
• If the first cartoon doesn't turn out the way you want, don't worry, with practice and time it will improve.

3. MOMENT OF PRACTICE AND EXECUTION:

a. Look at the following cartoon and identify the character represented there.
b. Who is the character in the cartoon?
c. What kind of caricature does it represent?

4. TRANSFER TIME:
a. According to the types of caricatures, choose the one that most attracts your attention and create a caricature
that is your own invention and creativity.

Freedom is the ability of human beings to act or not act according to their own criteria and will. That is to say,
freedom is what allows human beings to decide whether they want to do something or not, it makes them free, but also
responsible for their actions.

b. I make a caricature where it represents something alluding to freedom.
