1. Cruise trip. Using a radio navigation system, a tourist boat moves from an island to the coast,
keeping its distances perpendicular to two lighthouses located, one at each site at the coordinate
points R(0,-8) and T(0,-8). 8).

a. Find the equation that describes its path between the island and the coast.

b. What is the length of said path?

Solution

to.

The distances between the lighthouses and the boat remain perpendicular, this means that E
maintains a circular path at all times, so the equation that describes the path of the boat is:

X 2 +y 2 =64

b.
The length of the path is ½ of the circumference:
L=length
L=2πr/2=πr=π8

Then the length of the path is 8 π ≈ 25.13 length units

2. Space travel. A manned ship corrects a dangerous curved trajectory, descending in a straight
line to land at point T(4.821,4.175) in the south of the Pacific Ocean. Write the equation of the new
trajectory.

Solution

The ship is going to land after correcting a curved trajectory, the new trajectory is in a straight line
and this new trajectory is tangent to the point T(4.821, 4.175).

-The new trajectory is a tangent line to the given point.

The tangent line to a circle has the property of being perpendicular to the radius that joins the center
of the circle to the point of tangency.

First we must find the slope of the radius that joins T to the center of the circle. The center has
coordinates (0,0) . The desired slope is m=4.175/4.821 and the equation of the descent path is:

1 4.821
From where the slope of the tangent line to the circle in T is - 4.175 ; therefore
4.175 the
4.821

y - 4.175 =- 4.821
( x - 4.821 ) ⇒ y =- x + 9.74176

3. Sea-to-air missiles. A sea-air battery fires a missile that leaves the muzzle of the cannon
located 2 m above the water, with an initial speed of 100 m/s and an angle of 45º.
a. How long does it take for the projectile to reach its maximum height, and what is this?

b. What is the horizontal range x, of the missile?

Solution

We state the problem, the launch is 2 meters above sea level, the shooting angle is 45º and the initial
speed is 100 m/sec.

So we have the following diagram:

In the diagram you can see that the maximum height is reached at the Vertex of the Parabola with
respect to time, so if we find the point where the vertex is located we will have the answer to the first
question.

to.

VERTICAL COMPONENT

For simplicity we take ag=-10 m/s

v i = v sin(
o θ ) = 100 sin(45º) = 70.71 m / s
gt 2
y = y + vt + = 2 + 70.71 t - 5 t
or me 2

2 + 70 . 71t - 5t = y We divide by -5
- 0.4 - 14,142 t We complete the perfect square trinomial
+t 2
-5

t 2
- 14.142 t + (7.071) = y + 0.4 + (7.071) 2 2
Rearranging
-5

( t - 7.071 ) 2
= - 1 5 ( y - 252 )
The vertex of the parabola is at the point (7.071, 252), so it can be ensured that in 7.071 seconds the
projectile reaches its maximum height and said height is 252 meters.

b.
HORIZONTAL COMPONENT

V XO =V O COS( θ= ) 100 COS(45º) = 70.71 M / S

X =X +V o x OR T

The time we take to find the horizontal range is twice the time to reach the halfway point, making the
substitution:

x = 0 + (70.71m / s)(14.142s) = 999.98 ≈ 1000m

The horizontal range of the missile is 1 kilometer.
