WAR CODES
The film begins with Corporal Joe Enders (Nicolas Cage) and his Marine platoon
fighting Japanese forces on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands in late 1942. The
lieutenant and sergeants had died earlier, and Enders is left in charge. The marines are
falling little by little and while Enders tries to pick up the body of a fallen comrade, but
the comrade dies while they were trying to get out and Joe is wounded by a grenade
and left unconscious.
Enders is then transported to a field hospital, where he is awarded the purple heart and
later transported to a military hospital. A year later, Enders has fully recovered from his
injuries except for those in one ear. To return to service, he must pass an audiometry
and is helped by a nurse, is promoted to sergeant and is reinstated to active duty. He is
assigned a high-priority mission, which is to protect a Navajo radio operator named
Ben Yahzee (Adam Beach) at all costs. Sergeant Ox Anderson (Christian Slater)
receives the same orders to protect radio operator Charlie Whitehorse (Roger Willie).
They must prevent the code from falling into Japanese hands, meaning that if the
Navajo radio operator is captured they must kill him, in order to prevent the Japanese
from getting the code. In his squad are soldiers Pvt. Chick, who carries a Browning
M1918 automatic rifle, Private Pappas, Private Harrigan, equipped with a flamethrower,
and Private Nellie (played by Noah Emmerich, Mark Ruffalo, Brian Van Holt and Martin
Henderson respectively).
The Marines arrive on Saipan under heavy enemy fire. Yahzee and Whitehorse receive
their trial by fire in combat. In battle, Yahzee never opens fire on the Japanese.
When the beachhead is secured the Marines begin to advance towards the interior of
Saipan. Their convoy begins to receive artillery fire, causing them to have to take
cover. They soon realize that the artillery they are receiving fire from is the American
artillery, which is trying to eliminate the Japanese positions on the other side of the
road. Yahzee's radio is destroyed due to a gunshot, so the group has no way to call
their artillery to change the angle of fire. The commander then orders an attack on the
Japanese positions to avoid his own artillery. In the trailer, soldier Nellie dies while
trying to help a soldier, who lost a leg due to the bombing. To contact his artillery,
Yahzee decides to put on a Japanese uniform, as his features are mistaken for
Japanese and Enders poses as a prisoner. All to reach the Japanese lines and be able
to use a radio. Once they arrive, they take control of the radio, and after hesitating,
Yahzee kills the Japanese radio operator and contacts the American artillery. They
adjust their fire and manage to bombard enemy positions. There Yahzee makes his
first kill. After the battle, Enders is awarded the Silver Star for saving the lives of his
comrades. But then he gives it to Private Pappas to send to Private Nellie's wife (just
so you know, Private Nellie had asked Pappas to give his engagement ring to his wife if
he died, so that Private Pappas replied to keep it, since it will surely get out of here).
The group arrives at a Japanese town where the Marines are camping and Yahzee is
called to headquarters. Later the town is attacked by Japanese forces. Private Harrigan
is killed when his flamethrower's gas tank is shot (trying to save a girl) and Enders
shoots him in the head so he doesn't die in pain. Ox Anderson is decapitated when he
is defending Caballo Blanco, who is captured by the Japanese. When Enders manages
to arrive, he sees White Horse being taken away. He takes a grenade, the weapon,
and looking into the eyes of Caballo Blanco (who finally realized the Marines' orders),
he nods for him to throw it and prevent the Japanese from taking over the code, killing
the Navajo now. the Japanese.

After the Japanese attack, Yahzee returns from Headquarters and asks Enders where
White Horse is. He tells him that he killed him with a grenade. Yahzee, who does not
know Enders' true mission, attacks him and is about to shoot him before his
companions stop him.
As the battle nears its end, the squad is sent to check a previously bombed position. As
they head there, the group runs into a minefield and is attacked by the Japanese. They
manage to escape and then discover that the Japanese artillery is intact, just when it
opens fire on the American column that was advancing through open fields. As the
squad advances, Gunnery Sergeant Djelmsted (Peter Stormare) is killed under enemy
fire and command of the group passes to Enders. In contrast to the first scene of
Yahzee in combat, he charges in anger against the enemy, killing many Japanese
soldiers. In the heat, they lose the radio with which they needed to call to request air
support and eliminate the Japanese artillery. When they try to recover the radio, both
Enders and Yahzee are injured. When they are surrounded, Yahzee tries to get Enders
to shoot him to protect the code, but Enders refuses and carries Yahzee to safety. The
Navajo manages to contact air support, which destroys the Japanese cannons, saving
the American column, but then in the euphoria of having achieved it, Yahzee sees
Enders on the ground badly injured and tries in vain to save him. In his final words,
Enders tells Yahzee that he knows deep down that he did not want to kill White Horse.
The film ends when Yahzee returns to the United States and with his wife and son,
atop a mountain in Arizona, performs a Navajo ritual to honor the memory and spirit of
Joe Enders.
