G Prologue
The Elementary Korean Reading Book aims to develop the reading ability of beginning students of the Korean
language. Elementary level students need techniques to read easily accessible texts and to obtain necessary information
about basic topics in social life. For this reason, this book aims to maximize students' command of Korean so that they
can obtain necessary information by reading Korean texts. However, they do not have the objective of converting this
acquired knowledge for a productive (specialized) purpose or skill. This book offers knowledge about reading to
improve the productive capacity of students, and will also have additional texts and other topics for language learning.
G Objectives
1. Students will be able to understand and use vocabularies and structures found in sentences, and learn the familiar
and predictable themes of everyday life.
2. Students will be able to understand concrete ideas about themselves, their family and their daily lives in one or
several sentences in the informal context.
3. Students will be able to read and understand the texts they need to know for everyday life, including signs,
announcements, cards, letters, explanations and descriptions.
4. Students will develop different capacities so that through them, they can obtain any information they need to know,
as soon as possible.
5. Students will learn to understand and use written Korean taking into account the different characteristics that exist
with spoken Korean.
1. The tasks are programmed so that students can communicate in a perfect discourse context.
2. The text should focus on practical reading tasks, but will also have other forms of educational material to improve
the student's ability to carry out different tasks in real life, such as reading signs, advertisements, cards and letters.
3. Instead of text-only reading, this teaching book is designed so that students can build on their own knowledge
through more efficient reading.
4. This book not only has the objective of making all the texts perfectly understood, but also of teaching students
different skills so that they can obtain any information they need as soon as possible through quick reading and detailed
analysis.
5. The text contains different explanations about Korean culture, through which students will be able to learn related
cultural aspects about Korea.
6. This textbook aims to combine other language skills with reading. In particular, there are exercises to combine
reading and writing skills so that students can imitate words, expressions and structures, and be able to implement them
on their own.
G Text content
This book is made up of 20 chapters, and each chapter follows the following structure: Objective –Introduction –
Vocabulary -Reading Phrases -Task 1, 2, 3 –Culture -New Words –Continuation -Self-assessment
'Purpose' indicates the purpose of each chapter and also contains a category with new vocabularies and basic grammar.
The 'Introduction' consists of drawings and simple questions in Korean to arouse students' interest and thereby improve
the learning outcome by activating practical schemes for students.
In the 'Vocabulary' section, words and expressions are used to make the topic known and classify them according to
their meaning, and in this way improve the ability of the students. The reading book contains, in addition to the
grammatical patterns, 997 words in total. These are only needed to understand the text and so students do not have to
learn them all by heart. But at least they need to memorize 425 terms.
In 'Reading Phrases', there are the new grammatical patterns that must be learned in the chapter so that students can
learn grammar naturally.
The 'Homework' is made up of reading exercises learning grammar and vocabulary. The role of tasks is important in the
learning process since it induces knowledge and emphasizes the role of readers as interpreters of content. There are 3
tasks in each chapter. The tasks contain skills from the most basic to the most difficult, simple to complicated,
pedagogical tasks to real-life tasks so that all these tasks serve as a basis for the next task.
The 'Culture' part is to help students' cultural understanding of Korea and its language. This part contains information
about Korean culture, related to said chapter.
The 'New Words' section is made up of the new terms that appear in the 'Reading Phrases' and 'Homework' sections.
New words in the 'New Words' section appear in the 'index' at the end of the book.
The 'Continuation' part contains the points learned from the chapter, to give security to the students and at the same time
give them confidence so that they can use what they have learned in daily life. More exercises are given at this stage if
the student wishes.
In 'Self-assessment' students will be able to evaluate their level of understanding. Self-assessment is important, along
with the evaluation of other students and teachers, when learning a foreign language.

Courtesy is part of Korean culture, so the most important thing is to follow social norms when greeting in
Korea. Greetings vary depending on the age and social position of the person being greeted. A deep bow, a
slight bow, or a handshake is given when greeting, unless it is a minor person. The high bow ( keunjeol ) is
performed when the person receiving the greeting is of great respect to the person greeting him or her. This
greeting is carried out in wedding ceremonies or ancestral cults. The slight bow is the most common
greeting. For this greeting, the relationship between the two parties who greet each other is important, and
this implies that the social position of the other person is already known in advance. The handshake is
normally carried out as a slight bow. It is usually done by adults, and is a practice carried out in social life and

NANTA means hitting, just like the exchange of blows in a boxing match.
NANTA is a non-verbal musical performance that uses ordinary kitchen utensils as percussion instruments
in the form of a comedy show. NANTA integrates Korea's unique traditional rhythms in the style of Western
performance and the show takes place on a large stage where four whimsical chefs prepare a banquet for a
wedding ceremony. When cooking, they use all types of kitchen items, such as pots, pans, plates, knives,
cutting boards, water bottles, brooms, and even a combination of two or more items such as percussion
instruments. Rhythm dominates the space, and the audience is carried away by the explosion of traditional
sounds and actions on stage. Since the performance is mainly about rhythms and with few words, the
audience, of all ages and nationalities, can enjoy the theme and the music.

Each Chinese character is made up of several different lines in an imaginary square. Each
character has a specific meaning. Therefore, technically, calligraphy depends on the writer's

spaces between brush strokes. The finished work is hung on the wall to be admired like

The typical family form in ancient Korea was a large one, with three or four generations living
together. Due to the high infant mortality rate and the idea that a large family was a blessing ,
people wanted to have many children. However, the country 's accelerated industrialization and
urbanization in the 1960s and 1970s were accompanied by an effective campaign to improve birth control,
so the number The average number of children in a family has dropped dramatically to two or less
since the 1980s .
Due to the long tradition of Confucianism, in which the eldest son assumed the most important
position in the family, preference for sons was common in Korea. To address the problem of
male preference, the government completely changed the laws related to the family, guaranteeing
the equality of sons and daughters in terms of inheritance.
These days , young couples prefer to separate from their families and live independently.
According to this trend, today's families prefer to live separately as a couple and thus
constitute the new family nucleus of society.

한국의 문화( Korean Culture) : Insadong, the convergence of past and present
Insadong, in a sense, represents the convergence of past and present in Korea. Insadong and its surroundings
were previously residential areas of officials, royal family members and the aristocratic class known as the
yangban . Those ancient times come to life again in the old furniture, porcelain and traditional craft shops that
are seen around the place and attract many foreigners to Korea. Galleries , traditional tea houses, antique shops
and calligraphy shops give us a glimpse of ancient Korea. Insadong is a popular destination for people who want to
escape the busy life in modern times to experience for a while a time when traditional values made village life
simpler .

The subway is considered the most efficient transportation system in Seoul. Nine
subway lines and one underground line of the Korea National Railway (KNR) come
together to transport Seoulites and tourists visiting Korea. Seoul subway lines link
different parts of the city and satellite cities with the center of the metropolis. The
lines are well distributed throughout the city and most attractions in Seoul, such as
royal palaces, historical sites and theme parks, can be reached via the nine subway
lines.

In Korea, marriage is considered not only an important event in one's life, but also for the entire family. The
wedding ceremony is an essential act for marriage. The traditional wedding, which had not been practiced due to
the current trend of Western-style weddings, is currently gaining popularity. The groom dresses in an ancient court
official's suit, and wears a thick embroidered belt and a horsehair hat. The bride paints her cheeks and forehead
with a red circle to ward off evils. She wears a court lady's outfit with a crown full of jewels. The ceremony usually
begins with the gift of the groom, who gives him wooden geese. This is a sign for the bride's parents to promise
that they will always be faithful to their partner. Then the bride and groom exchange glasses of wine and bow to
each other. This ceremony is followed by another one, called pyebaek. For this ceremony, the groom's parents sit
before a table containing cooked chicken, jujubes, chestnuts and fruits. The bride and groom bow and offer
glasses of wine, and then the parents bless the couple by throwing jujubes on the bride's outstretched skirt, as a
wish for them to have many children. Then, the bride bows to the other members of the groom's family.

Kimchi is a representative Korean food. In Korea, kimchi is served with almost every
meal. During the 1988 Summer Olympics, thousands of foreigners were introduced to
kimchi for the first time. Despite its reputation for being spicy, many people have liked
it and missed it after returning to their country.
Kimchi is basically a dish with salt, seasoned vegetables, and is often served as a
main dish to accompany all types of Korean food. The fermentation of different
vegetables, complemented by salted fish and other seasonings, gives kimchi a unique
flavor. The spicy flavor of kimchi stimulates the appetite. It is also a nutritious dish and
provides vitamins, lactic acid and minerals. Kimchi can also be preserved for a long
time.
Red pepper was introduced for making kimchi in the 17th century. The use of red
pepper in kimchi was a great innovation for Korean culinary culture. By using red
pepper with vegetables and fish, a unique method of food preservation took place,
leading to the adoption of kimchi as a staple food in Korean life. Nowadays there are
many kinds of kimchi with different flavors. These are examples of the most common
types of kimchi.

pronounced in three syllables in Korean. The last name comes first, while the other
two characters make up the first name. However, this tradition is changing recently.
Most still follow the traditional custom, but more and more people are giving their
children native Korean names, which normally cannot be changed into Chinese
characters.
There are about 300 surnames in Korea, but only a few make up the vast majority of
the population. Among the most common surnames are Kim, Lee, Park, An, Jang,
Korean women do not change their last name after getting married. In Korea, if a
married woman introduces herself as Mrs. Kim, she usually refers to her father's
surname.

Traditional Korean painting shows the creativity and aesthetic sense of Koreans.
During the Yi Dynasty, professional painters generally painted landscapes, at the
request of noble families. Kim, Hongdo drew on his canvases the daily landscape of
nobles, peasants, artisans and merchants. With details and humorous themes, he
expressed the tradition of Korea. After Korea was subjected to the rule of Japan in
1910, the traditional style of Korean painting gradually gave way, giving rise to
Western painting, that is, oil painting.
