INTRODUCTION
Transmission 6T40/45
The 6T40/45 transmission uses a duct pressure control system during upshifts to
compensate for normal wear of transmission components. As the application
components within the transmission wear or change over time, the shift time (time
required to apply the clutch) increases or decreases. To compensate for these changes
the transmission control module (TCM) adjusts the pressure commands according to the
different PC solenoids to maintain the originally calibrated shift regulation. The automatic
tuning process is referred to as "adaptive learning" and is used to ensure consistent shift
feel and also increase transmission life. The TCM monitors the A/T input speed sensor
(ISS) and the A/T output speed sensor (OSS) during command shifts to determine
whether a shift is occurring too quickly (brisk) or too slowly (smooth). ) and adjusts the
corresponding pressure control (PC) solenoid signal to maintain the set shift feel.

DESCRIPTION
Transmission 6T40/45
The Hydra-matic 6T40/45/50 is a fully automatic, 6-speed, front-wheel drive, electronically
controlled transmission. It consists of a 4-element torque converter, a compound planetary
gear set, mechanical clutch and friction assemblies, and a hydraulic pressurization and
control system. There are 2 variants of the transmission based on torque capacity. The
architecture is common between variants and the differences related to the ta

DESCRIPTION
Transmission 6T40/45
The 4-element torque converter contains a pump, a turbine, a pressure plate splined to the
turbine, and a stator assembly. The torque converter acts as a fluid coupling to smoothly transmit
engine power to the transmission. It also hydraulically provides additional torque multiplication
when required. The pressure plate , when appliedar p i o r s op p u r los p io o n rci m on e a c n án 6 ica rel d a i c r i e o c

and is achieved through the use of the transmission control module (TCM) located within the
transmission. The TCM receives and monitors various inputs from electronic sensors and E u l tili

the timing and feel of the change. The TCM also controls the application and release of the
torque converter clutch which allows the engine to deliver maximum fuel efficiency without
sacrificing vehicle performance. All solenoids, including the TCM, are packaged in one valve
assembly
The hydraulic system mainly consists of a gear type pump, a control valve
body assembly and a case. The pump maintains the operating pressures
necessary to move the clutch pistons that apply or release the friction
components. These friction components, when applied or released, support UIDE
the automatic shifting qualities of the transmission.

disc clutches combine with the one-way clutch to provide 7 different gear ratios, 6 forward
and one reverse, across the gear sets. These gear sets then transfer torque through the
drive transfer gear, driven transfer gear and differential assembly.
