What is the Action-Oriented Approach?
The action-oriented approach (AOA) is one of the pillars of The Common European
Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEFR). The AOA
builds upon other perspectives, including the communicative approach, and encompasses
theories such as the socio-constructivist and complexity theories. A theoretical framework of
the AOA was released by Piccardo & North in 2019.

Learner-Teacher, Learning and Acquisition in Action Oriented Approach
In this approach in which knowledge and skill blended, the learner can no longer be called
only the constructor of knowledge, but can also be called as the one who can put together
new information with existing and can carry acquired knowledge to future learning process.
Teachers are the facilitators and guides that guide the learning process, form the need, take
an active role with the learners in the learning process and their task is to facilitate the
acquisition of real or near-real learning environments for the acquisition of language skills.

While acquisition word emphasizes the acquisition of the language in a natural way. the
learning word emphasizes the dominance of the knowledge dimension. Beside those who
think that foreign language can be acquired like Krashen, there are also the ones who argue
that this is not possible. "Some second language theorists have assumed that children
acquire, while adults can only learn. The acquisition-learning hypothesis claims, however, that
adults also acquire, that the ability to "pick-up" languages does not disappear at puberty. This
does not mean that adults will always be able to achieve native-like levels in a second
language. It does mean that adults can access the same natural "language acquisition device"
that children. use" (Krashen, 2009, p. 10). But it is possible for adults to acquire a second
language, though not as fast as children. For them it is only need to establish either natural
language environments or the environments which are closed to natural language
environments. These language environments are also built in terms of both tasks and needs in
action oriented method.

It is possible to control the individual from outside and direct him/her to learn through
creating needs that we can give the name of Language-Life Cycle. In this process, the topics
that the individual prioritizes in the foreign language are determined in advance. and these
subjects are equipped with social, cultural and linguistic knowledge and skills. The learner is
also included into this cycle. At this point, action oriented method not only provide to acquire
the language but also helps to learn the knowledge. If the grammar, which is a knowledge
dimension, is given purely, the learner focuses on the grammatical features of the message
rather than the content of the message during the reception and production skills..

"Language acquisition is very similar to the process children use in acquiring first and second

relevant to language acquisition (Brown and Hanlon, 1970; Brown, Cazden, and Bellugi. 1973,

The action-oriented approach has cultural, factional, linguistic, pragmatics and sociolinguistic
components. With these components there is also the social actors who perform the tasks
together, and the social environment (class) in which these social actors are performed their
tasks. In 2010, Pecheur showed the Action-oriented approach as follows:
* Learner-user social agent (in the middle of learning environment)
*Tasks:
* Acquisition of skills, Existential competence, ability to learn
*Context et Situations
4
The schema is like summarizing the action-oriented approach. The social agent who learns in
a learning environment uses various knowledge, skills and abilities when performing tasks.
Every place where language learning considered as a social process takes place is the social
learning environment therefore this social environment can be a classroom, home, shopping
centre. Learner is an autonomous as a language's user in this social environment but
collaborator as a social agent.

In this process Language user naturally wonder what he doesn't have (target culture), and try
to explain what he has (his own culture). So this leads to all social learners to gain a new
perspective pluricultural. Such a learning environment both facilitates language teaching and
allows the emergence of new needs. Teachers who guide learners as an observer should
enable them to acquire linguistic, social and practical knowledge and skills necessary for these
needs. This will contribute both to the acquisition of language and to the interest and
motivation of learners.

Key Concepts and Implications for Language Education
Social Agents
At the heart of the AOA is the innovative vision of the user/learner as a “social agent,”
meaning someone who exerts agency, or more simply put, acts with intentionality to
accomplish tasks (Bandura, 2001) within a social context. This signaled a major shift in
language education, moving it away from a linear process focused mainly on language
structures to one organized around completing real-life, collaborative tasks whose primary
focus is not language (Council of Europe, 2020). With the AOA, users/learners don’t merely
learn about the language, they live the language.

Seeing users/learners as “social agents” puts them at the centre of learning. It implies actively

Descriptive Scheme
The AOA brings the descriptive scheme of the CEFR to life.
The descriptive scheme provides a common language to talk about overall language
proficiency, outlining what is present in real-life communication. In a communicative
situation, general competences are combined with communicative language competences
(i.e., linguistic, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic). Users/learners draw upon their competences
under various conditions and constraints to engage in language activities while using
strategies to accomplish tasks (Council of Europe, 2020). Language activities and strategies are
presented under four modes of communication in the CEFR: reception, production,
interaction, and mediation.

Tasks
As described above, in the AOA, users/learners act (i.e., take action) to complete tasks. Below
are key elements found in an AOA task:
Learners are seen as “social agents” acting in real-life, authentic, meaningful learning
situations
Action is purposeful, with real-life application

There is a final product or artifact
Learners process authentic, real-life texts and experiences
There are conditions and constraints
There is collaboration
Learners draw upon and develop all of their resources
Learners make choices, thinking and acting strategically (Hunter et al., 2019)

Planning and Assessment
Using an AOA when planning involves starting with the end goal in mind – the completion of
the real-life task – and working backwards through a needs analysis to help learners build the
competences required to accomplish the task. The entire process of presenting the task to
learners, working through scaffolded sub-tasks to build the competences needed to complete
it, and performing the task is called a scenario. The scenario becomes the blueprint for the
task, bringing coherence to learning. When planning the steps of a scenario, it is important to
reflect on how they also contribute to learners’ “[…] sensibilization to the plurilingual
dimension and to the mediational aspects of any learning” (Piccardo & North, 2019).

Planning and assessment go together. The descriptors that guided the development of the
task are the same descriptors that are used transparently throughout the assessment process.
Descriptors can be used in many ways, such as:
In “signposting” success criteria so learners know where they are going
To identify strengths and areas for improvement
To monitor progress
To create observation checklists
To provide timely descriptive feedback while preparing for the task, and
To build the criteria of the summative assessment
In the AOA, educators take on a coaching role, guiding learners so that they may use all of
their resources and strategies to accomplish the task. With the AOA, both users/learners and
the teacher are in constant control.

Conclusion
Action-oriented approaches which handle language without ignoring its social context give
priority usage of language and action rather than grammar. It eases the load of purely
linguistic knowledge by means of actions. The difference between usage and leaming words
closely related with pragmatic components of language. It emphasized the importance of

daily usage of language by learners. Because this new language being learnt perhaps the only
common point that individual who is different in terms of culture and mother tongue. This
common point should be controlled and oriented by teacher meticulously. It shouldn't be
forgotten that this approach is based on the tasks.
All tasks have a great deal of skills and the other components being essential for social agent.
All tasks should contain the needs of learner and this is the teacher who creates the needs
and make learner feel it. This is the cycle of blending preliminary knowledge and skills with
the one to be acquired. So the nature, correctness and controllability of the preliminary
information are of utmost importance in the learning process, which is seen as actively
blending newly learned information with preliminary information. If the pre-information

Defining Self-Regulation
Self-regulated learning is a process that assists students in managing their
thoughts, behaviors, and emotions in order to successfully navigate their
learning experiences. This process occurs when a student’s purposeful actions
and processes are directed towards the acquisition of information or skills.

تعريف التنظيم الذاتي
التعلم المنظم ذاتًي ا هو عملية تساعد الطالب على إدارة أفكارهم وسلوكياتهم وعواطفهم من أجل التنقل
تحدث هذه العملية عندما يتم توجيه اإلجراءات والعمليات الهادفة.بنجاح في تجارب التعلم الخاصة بهم
.للطالب نحو اكتساب المعلومات أو المهارات
Generally, models of SRL are separated into phases. One popular
cyclical model discusses three distinct phases: Forethought and planning,
performance monitoring, and reflections on performance
12
Goal Setting
Goals can be thought of as the standards that regulate an individual’s actions .In the classroom, goals
may be as simple as earning a good grade on an exam, or as detailed as gaining a broad understanding
of a topic. Short-term attainable goals often are used to reach long-term aspirations. For example, if a
13
student sets a long-term goal to do well on an exam, then he or she also may set attainable goals such
as studying for a set amount of time and using specific study strategies to help ensure success on the
exam. Research also suggests that encouraging students to set short-term goals for their learning can
Planning :Similar to goal setting, planning can help students self-regulate their learning
prior to engaging in learning tasks. In fact, research indicates that planning and goal setting
are complementary processes, as planning can help learners establish well thought out goals
and strategies to be successful .Planning occurs in three stages: setting a goal for a learning
task, establishing strategies for achieving the goal, and determining how much time and
resources will be needed to achieve the goal .Teaching students to approach academic tasks
with a plan is a viable method for promoting self-regulation and learning.
Self-Motivation
Self-motivation occurs when a learner independently uses one or more strategies to keep themselves
on-track toward a learning goal. It is important to the process of self-regulation because it requires
learners to assume control over their learning .Furthermore, self-motivation occurs in the absence of
external rewards or incentives and can therefore be a strong indicator that a learner is becoming more
autonomous. By establishing their own learning goals and finding motivation from within to make
progress toward those goals, students are more likely to persist through difficult learning tasks and
Attention Control
In order to self-regulate, learners must be able to control their attention
15
. Attention control is a cognitive process that requires significant self-monitoring .Often this process
entails clearing the mind of distracting thoughts, as well as seeking suitable environments that are
conducive to learning (e.g., quiet areas without substantial noise) .Research indicates that students’
academic outcomes increase with focused time spent on-task .Thus, teaching students to attend to
learning tasks should be a priority. Teachers can help their students control their attention by
removing stimuli that may cause distractions, and providing students with frequent breaks to help
strategies as needed to facilitate their progress towards their desired goals .However, it is important to
note that most students, especially those in the primary grades, typically do not have a large
repertoire of learning strategies at their disposal .It takes time for students to learn and become
comfortable with different learning strategies. By modeling how to use new strategies and providing
appropriate amounts of scaffolding as students practice, teachers can help learners become
Self-Monitoring :To become strategic learners, students must assume ownership for their
learning and achievement outcomes .Self-regulated learners take on this responsibility by
monitoring their progress towards learning goals. The process of self-monitoring
encompasses all of the aforementioned strategies. In order for a learner to self-monitor their
progress, they must set their own learning goals, plan ahead, independently motivate
themselves to meet their goals, focus their attention on the task at hand, and use learning
strategies to facilitate their understanding of material .Teachers can encourage self-
monitoring by having students keep a record of the number of times they worked on
particular learning tasks, the strategies they used, and the amount of time they spent
working. This practice allows students to visualize their progress and make changes as
needed.

Help-Seeking
Contrary to popular belief, self-regulated learners do not try to accomplish every task on their own,
but rather frequently seek help from others when necessary .What sets self-regulated learners apart
from their peers is that these students not only seek advice from others, but they do so with the goal
of making themselves more autonomous. Teachers can promote positive help seeking behaviors by
providing students with on-going progress feedback that they can easily understand and allowing
Self-Evaluation
Students are more likely to become self-regulated learners when they are able to evaluate their own
learning, independent of teacher-issued summative assessments & .This practice enables students to
evaluate their learning strategies and make adjustments for similar tasks in their future. Teachers can
17
promote self-evaluation in the classroom by helping students monitor their learning goals and strategy
use, and then make changes to those goals and strategies based upon learning outcomes .
In summary, self-regulated learners are able to set short- and long-term goals for their learning,
plan ahead to accomplish their goals, self-motivate themselves, and focus their attention on their
goals and progress. They also are able to employ multiple learning strategies and adjust those
strategies as needed, self-monitor their progress, seek help from others as needed, and self-evaluate
their learning goals and progress based upon their learning outcomes. Teachers at the primary and
secondary levels can use the aforementioned strategies to promote self-regulation in their classrooms.
However, teachers should understand that learners develop at various paces, and strategies that work
best for one learner may not always work with the next.

strategies are used and what skills are involved in using those strategies .The focus of this kind of
instruction is modeling and demonstration. When teachers model and explain their own thought
processes necessary for completing activities and assignments, students are more apt to understand
and begin to use those same processes on their own .Though direct instruction may not be necessary
for encouraging SRL in all students, it may be essential for most students—especially younger learners
—as many fail to independently use SRL strategies effectively Research has shown that this type of
instruction can be the best initial strategy for encouraging students to be more self-regulative .
19
Guided and Independent Practice
Guided practice is another way teachers can help improve SRL and motivation .During guided
practices, the responsibility of implementing the learning strategy shifts from teacher to student. For
example, a student might practice implementing a specific writing strategy while the teacher carefully
observes and offers help when necessary. In a study of reading achievement, Vidal-Abarca, Mana, and
Gil (2010) examined whether guided practice of SRL strategies could improve fifth grade students’ test
scores. Findings revealed that guided practice of SRL strategies increased reading skill test scores,
improved motivation to read, and increased task engagement. Student-teacher conferencing is one
way teachers can help guide students in setting goals and monitoring their strategy use and progress,
*Independent practice should naturally follow guided practice. During this process, students are given
opportunities to practice the strategy on their own, which can ultimately reinforce autonomy .For
example, Stoeger and Ziegler (2008) examined whether teaching fourth grade students SRL strategies
would motivate them to read independently outside of the classroom, and whether independent
reading practice would improve reading comprehension scores. The data indicated that once students
were given SRL strategies to use, they were more likely to practice reading independently.
reading comprehension scores across an eight week period. Although direct and explicit strategy
instruction can be powerful on its own, students are less likely to incorporate the SRL strategy into
their academic routines without guided and independent practice .Ideally, strategy instruction
incorporates a combination of direct instruction and modeling, as well as guided and independent

أن يكون قوًي ا في حد ذاته ،إال أن الطالب أقل احتمالية لدمج إستراتيجية SRLفي إجراءاتهم األكاديمية دون ممارسة موجهة ومستقلة.

Social Support and Feedback
Social support from teachers and peers can serve an important role as students are learning
to be more self-regulative. Findings from a study with fifth grade students showed that task
engagement and the use of SRL strategies was more prevalent in students that regularly
received support from their teacher and peers (Patrick, Ryan, & Kaplan, 2007). Often, social
support comes in the form of feedback. Research indicates that effective feedback includes
information about what students did well , what they need to improve, and steps they can
take to improve their work.. This type of feedback is often referred to as progress
feedback .Not only can progress feedback assist students in improving their academic
achievement , it also can promote student motivation .and self-regulation. Labuhn et al.,
(2010) examined the effects of teacher feedback on the use of SRL strategies to improve
mathematics achievement of fifth grade students. Results indicated that students who
received feedback from their teachers were more likely to accurately use SRL strategies to
improve their mathematics scores.
Reflective Practice
Reflective practice, or adapting and revising pedagogical styles to accommodate students, might be
the most important and effective tool a teacher can use. This practice enables teachers to investigate
the possible reasons explaining the effectiveness of a given instructional strategy used in the
classroom. Through thoughtful reflection, experimentation, and evaluation, teachers can better create
regulative in the classroom would be ideal, the practice does not come without
and provide real support and opportunities for implementation is no small feat.
Many will find that the major obstacle in helping students become self-
regulative is the time required to teach students how to use specific strategies.
22
Although teachers in K-12 settings often are pressed to accomplish many tasks in
limited time spans, it is important to remember that SRL strategies can help
students learn new information and effectively prepare for those very
tasks .Fundamental changes at the school level may need to occur for teachers
to be able to allocate the time and resources necessary for preparing students to
Understanding that factors outside of the teacher’s control can have a major
impact on the development of a student’s ability to self-regulate also can prove
to be a challenge. For example, how students choose to approach and monitor
their learning is usually consistent with their preferred or desired social
identity .which can have little to do with a teacher’s instruction. Whereas
students who believe getting good grades is inappropriate for their social group
may disregard effective SRL strategies such as doing homework efficiently ;
students with identities consistent with intellectual curiosity may be more apt to
engage in SRL learning .Ultimately, students’ social identities can influence their
academic behaviors and educational goals.

Definition of Multimodality At its simplest level, multimodality is the concept that
communication and representation are, for the most part, multimodal, i.e. mixed-mode, in
today's world and even more so in the past (Kress, 2010; Kress and Van Leeuwen, 2001).
Furthermore, it is a theory with a strong social view of language, understanding all acts of
meaning making, linguistic and nonlinguistic, as fundamentally relating to the representation
of selves and social identities (e.g. who we are and who we wish to be) and our relationships
with other people and the world (Kress, 2010). This has vast implications for language
teaching as well, as it highlights the close ties between communication, identity, and the
shaping of social worlds, indicating that the teaching of a foreign language has a little more to
do with teaching ways of life than language itself. The best use of the term is employed by
Kress (2010) who defined modality as a "a socially and culturally shaped resource for making
meanings" (p. 2).

This definition recognizes the influence the varied forms of communication (e.g. speech, writing,
three-dimensional (3D) objects) as well as print and visual-based text (such as magazines and
computer screens) have on the way people make meanings. Kress and Van Leeuwen (2001) state that
the modes, which will be the building blocks of multimodality, are various means of engagement for
creating representations. The idea that a mode is really a channel for representation is echoed by
others such as Jewitt (2009) who states that everything that counts as semiotic representation does so
by enacting and re-presenting versions of the world and human experience, employing an array of
systems, for example, visual imagery and sound. Therefore, multimodality is the study of the various
combinations of modes and the ways they try to produce representations.

This brief discussion has outlined a dynamic and evolving field of inquiry that remains complex and
fragmented. The appeal of multimodality in language teaching lies in its potential to bridge the gap
between traditional language instruction and authentic language use, enabling learners to engage
with and interpret various forms of meaning. In the contemporary global context of English language
usage, this approach to language pedagogy holds promise for the future. The consensus emerging
from these discussions emphasizes that modes are socially and culturally constructed tools for
meaning-making, encompassing both conventional and unconventional resources available to
communicators. In English teaching settings, incorporating multimodal resources involves considering
how to translate textual meanings into other forms to enhance student engagement and
comprehension.
- It enables learners to engage with real-world language situations and interpret various forms of
meaning beyond conventional linguistic constructs.
- By incorporating multimodal resources into teaching materials and activities, educators can enhance
student engagement and comprehension
30
. - Visual aids, diagrams, and other non-verbal elements can provide additional layers of meaning and
appeal to different learning styles.
- Multimodality recognizes that communication involves more than just language; it encompasses a
range of semiotic resources for meaning-making
. - This approach encourages learners to explore and interpret various modes of communication,
including visual, auditory, and tactile elements, to construct and convey meaning effectively.
- In the increasingly diverse and interconnected world of English language usage, multimodal language
pedagogy equips learners with the skills to navigate and communicate in diverse cultural and linguistic
contexts.
- It promotes a deeper understanding of the multifaceted nature of language and communication,
preparing learners for the complexities of global interaction.
5. Moving Beyond Linear Models of Discourse: Multimodal language teaching challenges traditional
linear models of discourse, which view language as a typed, linear string of text
. - Instead, it embraces a more comprehensive approach that acknowledges the multiplicity of
semiotic resources involved in communication, expanding students' understanding of communication
beyond language alone

Several contemporary approaches have been proposed for integrating multimodality into English
language teaching. One notable approach is the use of digital storytelling, which combines multimedia
elements such as images, audio, and video to create compelling narratives that enhance language
learning (Robin, 2016). For example, a study conducted by Smith and Johnson (2018) demonstrated
the effectiveness of digital storytelling in improving language skills among ESL learners in a diverse
classroom setting. Digital storytelling enabled students to express themselves creatively while
developing language skills in a multimodal context. Previous research has highlighted the
effectiveness of digital storytelling in English language teaching by:
1. Enhancing Language Acquisition: Studies have shown that digital storytelling engages learners in
meaningful language production, leading to improved language acquisition. Through creating, editing,
and sharing digital stories, students actively use English in authentic contexts, reinforcing vocabulary,
grammar, and communication skills.
2. Encouraging Creativity and Collaboration: Digital storytelling encourages students to express their
ideas creatively through multimedia elements such as images, audio, and video. Collaborative
storytelling projects promote teamwork and peer interaction, fostering a supportive environment for
language practice and feedback.
3. Increasing Motivation and Engagement: The interactive and multimedia nature of digital storytelling
captures students' interest and motivation, leading to increased engagement in language learning
activities. Personalizing stories based on students' interests and experiences enhances their sense of
ownership and investment in the learning process.
4_. Developing Digital Literacy Skills: Engaging with digital storytelling tools and platforms equips
students with valuable digital literacy skills essential for success in the 21st century. By navigating
digital interfaces, editing multimedia content, and presenting their stories online, students develop
technological proficiency alongside language skills.
32
5_. Facilitating Cultural Understanding: Digital storytelling provides a platform for students to explore
diverse cultural perspectives and narratives, fostering intercultural competence and empathy. Through
sharing stories from their own cultural backgrounds and engaging with stories from different cultures,
students gain a deeper understanding of language in its cultural context.
• Another approach involves the use of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL), which leverages
mobile devices and applications to provide learners with on-the-go access to interactive language
resources and activities (Stockwell, 2015). MALL offers flexibility and convenience, allowing students
to engage with language learning materials anytime, anywhere, and at their own pace. Additionally,
the concept of transmodal pedagogy has emerged as a promising framework for integrating
multimodality into English language teaching (Serafini, 2017). Transmodal pedagogy emphasizes the
fluidity and interconnectedness of different modes of communication, encouraging educators to
design learning experiences that seamlessly integrate verbal, visual, and digital elements to scaffold
language learning and promote critical thinking skills.
33
Research has highlighted the effectiveness of mobile-assisted learning as a multimodal approach in
teaching English by:
1. Facilitating Ubiquitous Learning: Mobile devices enable learners to access English language learning
materials anytime and anywhere, promoting continuous learning outside the classroom. 2.
Incorporating Multimedia Resources: Mobile apps and platforms offer a variety of multimedia
resources such as videos, audio recordings, interactive exercises, and games, catering to different
learning styles and preferences.
3. Enhancing Engagement and Motivation: The interactive and personalized nature of mobile-assisted
learning activities, such as quizzes, games, and multimedia content, increases student engagement
and motivation, fostering a positive learning experience.
4. Providing Immediate Feedback and Support: Mobile apps often include features for immediate
feedback on language exercises and assessments, allowing learners to track their progress and receive
support in real-time
6. Supporting Differentiated Instruction: Mobile apps can adapt content and activities based on
learners' proficiency levels, learning pace, and preferences, providing tailored instruction to meet
individual needs.

Gamification involves integrating game elements, such as points, rewards, and challenges, into
language learning activities to motivate and engage learners (Hamari et al., 2014). Game-based
learning, on the other hand, utilizes educational games and simulations to provide immersive
language learning experiences (Dickey, 2011). By incorporating game mechanics and narratives,
gamification and game-based learning foster a sense of enjoyment, autonomy, and achievement
among learners, leading to increased motivation and engagement (Sailer et al., 2017). These
approaches also promote the development of language skills, problemsolving abilities, and socio-
cultural awareness through interactive and experiential learning experiences (Gee, 2007).

Multimodal text analysis involves examining and interpreting texts that incorporate multiple modes of
communication, such as written language, images, and sound (Jewitt, 2016). By analyzing multimodal
texts, learners develop critical thinking skills and gain insights into how meaning is constructed and
conveyed through different modalities. Multimodal text analysis enhances language comprehension
and communication abilities by enabling learners to interpret and create multimodal texts in various
contexts (Bezemer & Jewitt, 2010). This approach also fosters digital literacy skills and media literacy
competencies, empowering learners to navigate and critically evaluate multimodal texts in today's
digital society (Lankshear & Knobel, 2011).
VR and AR technologies offer immersive language learning environments that simulate real-world
contexts and provide interactive learning experiences (Chang & Hsu, 2011). Virtual language labs,
virtual field trips, and AR-enhanced language activities allow learners to practice language skills in
virtual environments, improving language proficiency and cultural understanding. VR and AR enhance
35
language learning outcomes by providing opportunities for experiential and situated learning,
enabling learners to interact with digital objects and environments in meaningful ways (Merchant,
2017). These technologies also facilitate collaboration, communication, and intercultural exchange
among learners from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds (Facer et al., 2004).
Recent approaches to multimodality in language teaching offer innovative and effective ways to
enhance language learning experiences in the digital age. Mobile-assisted language learning, digital
storytelling, gamification, multimodal text analysis, and virtual reality and augmented reality
technologies provide learners with interactive, engaging, and personalized learning environments that
cater to their individual needs and preferences. By leveraging digital technologies and diverse
modalities, educators can create dynamic and immersive language learning experiences that promote
language proficiency, cultural understanding, and digital literacy skills among learners.

An Analytical Perspective Multimodality in teaching English has emerged as a dynamic approach that
integrates various modes of communication, such as visual, auditory, and tactile elements, to enhance
language learning experiences. This essay aims to analyze the effectiveness of multimodality in English
language teaching by examining its impact on language acquisition, student engagement, cultural
understanding, and digital literacy. Drawing upon existing research and scholarly literature, this essay
explores the benefits of multimodal approaches in language education and provides insights into its
implications for pedagogical practice.
• Impact on Language Acquisition Multimodal teaching methods have been shown to facilitate
language acquisition by providing learners with diverse opportunities to engage with and practice
36
English language skills. According to Smith and Higgins (2017), incorporating multimedia resources,
such as videos, audio recordings, and interactive exercises, into language instruction can reinforce
vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Additionally, interactive storytelling activities role-plays, and
digital simulations offer immersive language learning experiences that promote active engagement
and meaningful language use (Johnson, 2019). By leveraging multiple modes of communication,
multimodal approaches cater to different learning styles and preferences, thus enhancing language
acquisition outcomes for diverse groups of learners.
• Enhanced Student Engagement One of the key advantages of multimodal teaching is its ability to
increase student engagement and motivation in language learning. Research suggests that
multimedia-rich learning environments capture students' interest and attention, leading to higher
levels of participation and active involvement in language learning activities (García & Otheguy, 2018).
For example, interactive language games, virtual reality simulations, and digital storytelling platforms
provide students with opportunities for hands-on exploration and creative expression, fostering a
sense of ownership and investment in the learning process (Lee & Yoon, 2020). Moreover,
collaborative projects and peer-to-peer interactions facilitated through multimodal technologies
promote social interaction and communication skills development, contributing to a supportive and
inclusive learning environment (Alim, 2016).
• Promotion of Cultural Understanding Multimodal approaches in English language teaching also play
a crucial role in promoting cultural understanding and intercultural competence among learners. By
incorporating diverse cultural perspectives, narratives, and multimedia resources into language
instruction, educators can create inclusive learning environments that celebrate linguistic and cultural
diversity (Kramsch, 2018). For instance, multimedia materials featuring authentic cultural content,
such as music, films, and literature, provide students with insights into the cultural contexts of English
language usage, enabling them to develop empathy, respect, and appreciation for other
_ cultures (Wang & Han, 2019). Additionally, collaborative cross-cultural projects and digital exchanges
facilitate meaningful interactions and dialogue between students from different cultural backgrounds,
fostering mutual understanding and cross-cultural communication skills (Kern, 2018)
37
• تعزيز مشاركة الطالب إحدى المزايا الرئيسية للتدريس متعدد الوسائط هي قدرته على زيادة مشاركة الطالب وتحفيزهم في تعلم

Development of Digital Literacy Skills Furthermore, multimodal teaching approaches contribute to the
development of digital literacy skills essential for navigating the digital landscape of the 21st century.
By engaging with multimedia tools, digital platforms, and online resources, students acquire
technological proficiency and critical thinking skills necessary for effectively accessing, evaluating, and
creating digital content (Warschauer & Grimes, 2017). For example, digital storytelling projects require
students to utilize a range of digital tools and media formats to compose and share their narratives,
)thereby enhancing their digital communication and media production skills (Cope & Kalantzis, 2016
. Moreover, exposure to diverse digital technologies and online platforms enables students to become
discerning consumers and producers of digital content, preparing them for success in an increasingly
)digitalized world (Dudeney et al., 2019

Previous researches : The research conducted by Jennifer Rowsell and Diane Collier explores the
intersection of multimodality, language, and education. Specifically, their work delves into how
various modes of communication, such as visual, auditory, and tactile elements, interact with
language learning and teaching practices in educational settings. Through their research, Rowsell and
Collier investigate how different modalities contribute to meaning-making processes, comprehension,
and expression in language learning contexts. They explore how educators can effectively integrate
multimodal approaches into their teaching strategies to enhance student engagement, understanding,
and communication skills. Additionally, their research may address topics such as digital literacy,
multimedia learning environments, and the impact of technology on language education.

Overall, Schickel and Collier's research is intended to help us understand how multimodal
communication encyclopedias and improve language development and learning outcomes in
diverse discussions. Its year was distinguished by the points addressed in the research:
• Multimodality is conceptualized as the integration of different options of differentiation
and expression within textual structures, extending beyond writing or traditional writing.
These include computer or visual modes such as drawing, painting and video, to part of
printed materials such as books and newspapers, as well as gestural, dramatic and oral
modes. Scholars such as Kress and Stein have been instrumental in developing the field of
multimedia, with Kress being particularly influential due to his theoretical contributions.
However, the roots of multimodality can be traced back to earlier theorists like Halliday,
under whom Kress studied.
• Although the term multimodality became more prominent at the turn of the 21st century,
language and literacy educators and researchers, have been interested in other modes,
39
besides print, since the 1970s (e.g., Clay, 1975) and the 1980s (e.g., Dyson, 1982). In practice,
the term multimodal is used often when talking about including visual or design literacies,
digital literacies or non-linguistic modes alongside other models
• The roots of multimodality in education are most closely connected to early theorists in
semiotics, Semiotics works on the principle that anything can be a sign, as long as one derives
meaning from it. Theorists working within a semiotic frame view language as an idealized and
)abstract system (Peirce, 1977; Saussure, 1959
• semiosis does not happen in isolation. Saussure developed a formalized approach to
semiotics that described how signs have meaning relationships to each other. Peirce, on the
other hand, believed that people use semiotic resources at-hand to communicate. One of
Peirce’s well-known phrases is ‘we think only in signs.’ Along with Saussure, he discussed the
signifier as the form and the signified as the concept one derives from the form. In
multimodal parlance, the signifier is the material and mode and the signified is how meaning
is made Also , there are lots of other studies and researches that has proves the effectiveness
of multimodality in language teaching and learning that discusses The incorporation of
diverse modalities, such as visual, auditory, and kinesthetic elements, appeals to different
learning styles and preferences, leading to greater student participation and interest in
language tasks (Lee & Yoon, 2020).

In their study, Lee and Yoon (2020) investigated the impact of incorporating diverse
modalities, such as visual, auditory, and kinesthetic elements, on student engagement and
interest in language tasks. They conducted observations and interviews to examine how
students responded to various multimodal teaching methods in the language classroom. The
findings revealed that when teachers integrated visual aids, such as diagrams, images, and
videos, auditory components like listening exercises or songs, and kinesthetic activities such
as role-playing or hands-on tasks, students demonstrated increased participation and interest
in language learning. Visual learners were more engaged during activities involving visual
aids, auditory learners showed enthusiasm during listening tasks, and kinesthetic learners
were actively involved in hands-on activities. In conclusion, multimodality plays a pivotal role
in language teaching by offering educators a versatile and effective approach to engage
learners and enhance language learning outcomes. By integrating diverse modalities such as
visual, auditory, and kinesthetic elements into language instruction, educators can cater to
the individual learning styles and preferences of students, leading to increased engagement,
participation, and interest in language tasks. Multimodal teaching methods create dynamic
and interactive learning environments that foster active learning, critical thinking, and
creativity among students. Moreover, multimodality facilitates authentic language use,
cultural understanding, and digital literacy skills development, preparing learners for effective
communication in today's diverse and technologically-driven world. Overall, the adoption of
multimodal approaches in language teaching is essential for promoting inclusive, engaging,
and effective language learning experiences that empower students to achieve linguistic
proficiency and communicative competence.
