7. PROCESS DESCIPTION

7.1 INTRODUCTION

Personal Protective Equipment is the last line of defense in the control hierarchy, and is
used when all other attempts to control exposure have been unsuccessful, or as an interim
control while other control methods are evaluated or implemented.

7.2 REQUIREMENTS

Where respiratory protection elements for workers must be used, this program must be
applied. The program will be updated as necessary to reflect changes in workplace
conditions that affect the use of respirators, and shall include procedures for:

 Select respirators for the workplace according to what is established in the guide
for the Selection and Control of Respiratory Protection of the Institute of Public
Health (ISP).
 The proper use of respirators in routine and emergency situations that can be
foreseen.
 Training for workers in the proper use of the respirator, its maintenance, cleaning,
storage, inspection and disposal.
 Performing qualitative fit testing daily, before and during the execution of tasks.
 Medical evaluations and monitoring of workers who need to use respirators, and
regular evaluation of the effectiveness of the program.

7.3 TYPES OF RESPIRATORS

7.3.1 AIR PURIFIER:

PROGRAM
PG - PR - 01

Regardless of the type of respirator used, filters protect only against contaminants for which
they have been approved, and in particular, those that have been approved for use against
gases and vapors do not protect against exposure to particulate matter and vice versa.
Additionally, since these respirators barely remove contaminants from the air, they do not
protect in oxygen-deficient atmospheres.

7.4 SELECTION OF RESPIRATORS:

The selection of respirators will be carried out in accordance with the provisions of the
Guide for the Selection and Control of Respiratory Protection of the ISP Public Health
Institute and will depend on the nature, physical form, toxicity and concentration of the
contaminants present, the tasks that must be performed and the factors related to the
operator. Experience indicates that a percentage of people, perhaps 15%, do not have an
adequate seal on the filters of disposable facepiece respirators, while this percentage is
much lower on reusable half-facepiece respirators made from silicone. Attention must be
paid to all of the factors described below in order to select the correct respirator. Worker
involvement in selecting appropriate respirators is critical to the success of the Respiratory
Protection Program.
 According to the Evaluation Report on Free Crystallized Silica and Respirable
Fraction Dust carried out by Mutual de Seguridad, it recommends the use of the
Half Face Respiratory Protector, with high efficiency P100 filters .

7.4.1 PROTECTION FACTOR.

The protection factor is a measure of the reduction in exposure that can be expected from a
respirator when used as part of the respiratory protection program. The protection factor
can be expressed as follows:

Protection factor = Air concentration in the environment / Concentration inside the

respirator
REVISION 00
Producer and Marketer L'isola RESPIRATORY PROTECTION DATE September 2016
Ltda
PROGRAM
PG - PR - 01

The protection factor assigned to the respirator and filter combination depends on both the
filter classification and the style of the respirator (See Annex 1 Masks and Filters by area).

7.4.2 EXPOSURE ASSESSMENT

To select a respirator with adequate filter capacity, an exposure assessment must be
performed. The concentration obtained is subsequently compared to the exposure limit to
determine the protection factor needed to purchase the appropriate respirator and filter. (
Annex No. 4 )

7.4.3. SELECTION FACTORS RELATING TO POLLUTANTS.

The selection of the appropriate respirator will be carried out by the Risk Prevention
Department of the Production and Marketing company L'isola Ltda, Checklist for the
Selection of Respiratory Protection ( Annex Nº3 ). To help you determine the appropriate
type of respirator, here are some questions:
 Is the contaminant a particle, a gas or vapor, or both?
 What is the contaminant concentration, exposure standard, and protection factor
needed?
 If the respirator fails, will there be an immediately dangerous situation to health
or life?
 Does the contaminant have irritating properties? (Indicate if full facial protection
is needed, including eyes and face).

7.4.4 SELECTION FACTORS RELATED TO TASKS.

These factors include:
 Time the respirator should be used.
 Whether the respirator should be used regularly.
 The mobility required by the person who uses it.
 The nature of the workplace, if it is confined, the thermal conditions.

Producer and Marketer L'isola RESPIRATORY PROTECTION DATE September 2016
Ltda
PROGRAM
PG - PR - 01

 The need for communication.

 Other personal protective equipment.

7.4.5 SELECTION FACTORS RELATED TO THE RESPIRATOR USER.

These factors are the following:
 The physical condition of the worker to withstand the extra pressure of working
while wearing a respirator.
 The person's ability to accept constriction when using a respirator.
 Facial hair.
 If the person wears glasses, this may interfere with the seal of the respirator.
 If the person has facial problems such as allergies or acne, which may affect the
closure of the facial seal.

7.5. TRAINING.
The training will be carried out through a comprehensive talk and will be directed to all
workers, supervisors and management of the company. This will be carried out for a certain
period of time and will be the responsibility of the Risk Prevention Department. The
purpose of the training is to make the worker understand the following points:
 How does the respirator protect against contaminating agents?
 Respirator limitations, including filter life.
 How the respirator was selected, including fit testing.
 The importance of using the respirator every time you are exposed.
 Maintenance, cleaning and storage requirements.

7.6 RESPIRATOR ADJUSTMENT.

7.6.1. METHODS AND TESTS FOR RESPIRATOR FIT
Respirator fit testing is an integral part of a respiratory protection program, as it can check
the effectiveness of the seal and whether or not the respirator protects adequately. It should
be done at least twice a year. There are two methods, one quantitative and one qualitative,
which are described below:

7.6.2. QUALITATIVE FIT TEST METHOD

This method uses a non-toxic but strong-tasting chemical, such as plantain oil or saccharin,
which is misted into the breathing zone of the person wearing the respirator. The person's
inability to detect the chemical through the respirator is the indicator of effectiveness. This
method is simple and cheap, but it relies on the person's ability to smell or taste the
chemical, and to report whether or not they detect the presence of said chemical. Respirator
manufacturers have elements to carry out this type of tests.

7.6.3. QUANTITATIVE FIT TEST METHOD

This method uses a Portacount Kit, which samples the air inside and outside the respirator.
This numerical reading is an indicator of fit, but should not be considered a protective

PROGRAM

factor. This method has the advantage that it does not rely on a subjective response, but the
equipment needed has a high value and requires trained personnel to operate it.

7.6.4. FIT CHECK

This check involves the worker covering the inhalation ports of a half- or full-face
respirator and breathing in liberally. The respirator must be fitted to the face, and there
must be no air leakage. The fit check should be performed daily. (Annex No. 5)

7.6.5. FACIAL HAIR

Facial hair will interfere with the seal on full face respirators. People who wear beards,
mustaches that extend beyond the edges of the mouth, or sideburns that extend past the line
shown in the drawing are not protected. Accordingly, all people who require protection are
recommended to shave daily or maintain a shave that allows the correct seal of the
respirator.

A= Groove in the ear cartilage

B = Edge of the eye
C= Bottom line from which the temples cannot extend

The fit of a full-face or half-face respirator can be affected by eyeglass frames, facial scars
or acne, the absence or presence of dentures, and the shape of the person's face. It is
important to consider this aspect when selecting a respirator. If a person cannot properly fit
a respirator of a particular type or brand, he or she will not be able to perform tasks where

PROGRAM
PG - PR - 01

the use of a respirator is mandatory. In these cases, alternative activities must be arranged
until alternative respirators that fit properly are provided.

7.7 CLEANING, MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE OF REUSABLE

RESPIRATORS.

It is essential that there are cleaning, maintenance, and storage procedures so that
respirators are always in good condition and available. Manufacturers' instructions must be
followed. Those who carry out maintenance and cleaning programs, as well as those users
who clean their own respirators, must receive the corresponding training.

7.7.1. CLEANING.

The cleaning frequency will depend on the frequency of use and the degree of dirt on the
respirator. When respirators are used routinely, daily cleaning is required.
Respirators can be washed with detergent and warm water using a soft brush. Care should
be taken to prevent damage from rough handling, especially if machine cleaning.
After cleaning, the respirator should be disinfected, rinsed with plenty of water, and dried.
Manufacturer's instructions should be followed regarding the correct type of detergents,
disinfectants, cleaning procedures (especially when machine cleaning), and water and air
temperatures.

7.7.2. MAINTENANCE

Respirators should be checked before and after use and also when cleaning them. The
people who carry out this maintenance must receive training. Check disposable respirators
for possible physical damage, you should also check the elasticity of the straps, and the
metal piece that goes on the nose in case there is any deterioration. If damage is found,
these respirators must be replaced. In the case of reusable respirators, each piece must be
checked for damage, breaks, cracks, distortions, dust and debris, damage to the valves and
valve seats, used or missing gaskets, threads with wear, deterioration and loss of elasticity

PROGRAM
PG - PR - 01

in the straps. You must follow the manufacturer's instructions, use only appropriate spare
parts, and do not use parts from another product or manufacturer.

7.7.3. STORAGE

Respirators should be stored near the place where they will be used, and should be kept
clean and dry away from heat sources and direct exposure to the sun and contaminants.
These should be stored in airtight plastic bags. Respirators in storage, particularly those that
are not used frequently, should be checked often to ensure that they are clean and free of
dust, moisture, and that the mold is tight so that they are ready for use. The life of steam or
gas filters may be affected if they are stored exposed to air contaminants.

7.8. MEDICAL EVALUATION IN THE USE OF RESPIRATORS

The use of respirators places additional stress on the worker's cardiac and respiratory
systems, so those who need to use them daily should be evaluated by a doctor to verify that
they can withstand this additional stress.
Workers who have a medical history of asthma, or who suffer from chronic lung disease,
circulation problems, or heart disease may be at risk if they wear respirators. For extreme
cases, special recommendations should be considered, or reviewed more frequently. The
evaluation will be carried out in the Staff Health Unit, within the control program for
officials with chronic pathologies, where chronic pathologies that may be affected by
oxygen deficiency resulting from the use of the respirator will be investigated.
If you encounter workers with this type of pathology, you should proceed as follows:
 Remove the worker from the area where respirators are used.
 Keep the worker in periodic controls of his pathology.
 If possible, relocate the worker to an area where he or she should not use the respirator.

7.9 INSPECTIONS.
REVISION 00
Producer and Marketer L'isola RESPIRATORY PROTECTION DATE September 2016
Ltda
PROGRAM
PG - PR - 01

Whatever respiratory protection system is available for workers, the corresponding

inspection measures must be in place to evaluate the effectiveness of exposure control.

7.10. PROGRAM EVALUATION.

A periodic evaluation of the respiratory protection program should be carried out to verify:
 That the reasons for implementing the program remain valid, which should include a
review of the concentration of contaminants in the workplace.
 That respirators be used in the workplace.
 That respirators are being used correctly
 That the maintenance processes work correctly.
 That the program continues to fulfill its original purposes.
