LIFE IN ANCIENT GREECE (mythology, Greek art and life/society in ancient Greece )
THE PROJECT
The project will consist of carrying out three tasks that are related to each other since they work on aspects of life in
ancient Greece.
You are going to watch the movie “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the lightning thief” and do the activities that I
propose.

Synopsis
Percy is a normal boy who, after a school trip, finds out the big secret that has always been hidden from him: his real
father is Poseidon, the god of the seas. From that moment he begins to discover the hidden world of the Greek divinities,
who have known how to adapt to life in the 21st century, but he is also discovered, which will place him at the center of a
dispute between his father and Zeus, who It will lead him on a thrilling adventure, in the company of his new friends, to
restore cosmic order.

Tasks
- Identify the characters that appear in the film with the gods and demigods (or heroes) of Greek mythology.
- Pay attention to the character of Percy Jackson. What similarities and differences are there between his story and that of
Perseus?
- The gods of Olympus were selfish. Do you think this is reflected in the myth of Demeter's lost daughter? Reason your
answer.
3) Individual activity
- Why do you think mythological stories emerged? How do you think they were transmitted?
- Choose one of the characters from the film and analyze their way of acting. Describe his actions and say whether they
seem correct or not to you.
- Give constructive criticism about this film, what is your opinion about what it wants to tell us?

TASK B/ WORKSHOP: GREEK ART. Analyze an artistic work . Individual or pair activity

You are going to do two activities, and they will be done on sheets of paper and by hand . Photocopy or draw the work
and answer the following questions:
1) Analyze an architectural work . Choose one of the works seen in class and follow the following steps:
Name of the building and author. Chronology.
a) Write its function: residential, religious, commercial, military, recreational, etc.
b) Material with which it is made: stone, brick, adobe, wood, etc.
c) Rooms or rooms of the building.
d) Plan: square, rectangular, circular.
e) Order: Doric, Ionic or Corinthian.
f) Decorative elements: reliefs, paintings, sculptures, columns, etc.
2) Analyze a sculptural work . Choose one of the works seen in class and follow the following steps:
Name of the work and author. Chronology.
a) Type of sculpture: Round lump, figure or sculptural group.
b) Whole body, bust, torso.
c) Attitude: standing, recumbent, equestrian...
d) Relief: high relief, low relief.
e) Period and theme: description of the scene.
f) Material: stone, wood, clay, bronze, gold...
g) Dependent on architecture: frieze, pediment, capital….
h) Independent of architecture: squares, gardens, etc.
TASK C/ WORKSHOP: What was life like in ancient Greece? Individual or pair activity
Carry out the following activities, which will be delivered by hand and on sheets of paper ( TAKE CARE OF YOUR GRAPHY
AND SPELLING ). You can use photos or drawings to support your answers:
1) Make a social pyramid with the social groups of ancient Greece and explain who they were and what each one did.
2) Why do you think ancient civilizations allowed and encouraged slavery?
3) What did slaves work on?
3) What tasks did non-citizens perform? What did women do?
4) What did the ancient Greeks eat?
5) Describe a typical house from ancient Greece
6) Were there schools in ancient Greece? Who were going? What subjects did they have?
7) What did the Greeks do? What did they work on?
8) The Greek Olympics . Comment on what they were, where they were held, every few years, who participated and the
most important sports they practiced.
All team activities must reflect which tasks, activities, etc. does each one or what
together.
