POWER STEERING

ELECTRICALLY EPS

MEMBERS:
EPS ELECTRICALLY POWER STEERING

The EPS or electrically assisted steering works with an electric motor that produces
a torque or assistance force depending on the effort on the steering wheel by the
driver. There is also an active return of the steering wheel, a compensation for the
load on the steering column.
PARTS
*The motor
*Torque Sensor
*Angle Sensor
*The switchboard
EPS FAILURES

1 – Difficulties when turning the steering wheel.- A power steering problem can begin
with slight difficulty when turning the steering wheel. The problem could simply be a low
power steering fluid level. However, this usually indicates a more serious problem such as
a leak.
2 – Squeaking or high-pitched noises when turning.- Once again, these sounds can be
caused by a loss of power steering fluid. However, the problem can also be caused by a
faulty power steering belt. If it breaks completely, the driver will be left without steering
assistance. If the belt is damaged, it should be replaced as soon as possible
3 – Steering wheel vibrates.- Unlike some of the other warning signs we have examined,
steering wheel vibration usually has nothing to do with low power steering fluid level.
Instead, this is probably due to the power steering belt being out of alignment. If the belt is
not properly aligned with the drive train, or is even broken, it can cause unstable steering.
4 – Dark, odorless liquid.- It is perfectly normal not to have to

time. However, it doesn't last forever. Check the fluid at each periodic inspection
of your customers' vehicles. This should be red and have a fairly noticeable smell.
If it appears dark and has no odor, it may need to be replaced.
STEERING TORQUE SENSOR
(located on the steering box) senses the magnitude of the torque and reports the
detected steering torque to the power steering control unit. Servo assistance to the
steering is carried out through a second pinion that acts in parallel on the rack.
STEERING ANGLE SENSOR FAILURES
When the steering wheel angle sensor fails, there is a malfunction
indicator in the instrument cluster that alerts the driver that the
electronic stability system has disabled and requires service.
ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE
The electronic control module of an automobile works using closed-loop control or
a type of control scheme designed to monitor the outputs of a system in order to
control the inputs sent to the system. The electronic control module receives data
from dozens of sensors in the car's electrical systems and performs calculations to
determine factors such as fuel ignition timing and how long a fuel injector should
remain open.

MULTIMETER
is a testing instrument used to measure two or more electrical values,
mainly voltage (volts), current (amperes), and resistance (ohms). It is
a standard diagnostic tool for technicians in the electrical and
electronics industries.
OSCILLOSCOPE
An oscilloscope fulfills two basic functions: sampling and triggering.
In the case of sampling, it is based on collecting data to form the signal that will be displayed on the
screen. This is the primary function and the one that provides the greatest amount of data at the time
of use. With this function the user will be able to collect as much information as possible for the work
they are doing.
The second is the shooting function. This is divided into three alternatives and one of the most useful
is the single shot. Through it the user will have the ability to establish a certain number of conditions
that must be met in the study circuit for the oscilloscope to trigger automatically. There is also the
edge trigger to evaluate a specific point of the signal and the pulse width trigger that is used in the
case of very complex signals.
AUTOMOTIVE SCANNER
*PERFORM COMPLETE AUTO DIAGNOSIS OF THE CAR
The scanners have the function of detecting all the electronic control units that have been
installed in the car and can read the error codes in case there are any faults in the car.
*IDENTIFICATION READER
The scanner will show us the total identification of the control unit; Some examples, the
manufacturer, the number of parts the car has, the version or brand of the software, etc.
The main function is to read error codes (check engine)
Displays the complete description of all stored errors (an example, "Oxygen Sensor
Failure").
* DELETE STORED ERROR CODES
Errors are stored when a fault exists and this function is responsible for eliminating all found
error codes and other data from the diagnostic information.
*ACTUATOR TEST
Special actuator test (e.g. lock/unlock doors, turn on fuel pump, fuel cut-off, TPMS wheel
lock/unlock, etc. All of this depends on the options available on the vehicle and the Automotive
Scanner) *MEASURE VALUES
An important function to have knowledge of the status of the car is a program for reading live data,
such as oxygen sensor, display of engine speed, coolant temperature, battery voltage, fuel settings,
etc. These values can be displayed on a graph thanks to the program.
*PROGRAMMING AND ADAPTATION FUNCTION
This function is very important since in all vehicles with control unit systems, airbags, alarms,
immobilizers, and some others; require reset programming procedures to be performed, it is done
after some electronic repairs on cars, or even after replacing the Electronic Control Unit.
