Rhinosporidiosis

Rhinosporidiosis: Rhinosporidiosis :
• Rhinosporidium seeberi ( Non-cultivable Vascular/polypoid mass hanging
fungus, now reclassified as a Protista under from the nostril of a patient
(Strawberry polyp).
Mesomycetozoa).
• Commonly seen in farmers in southern
India.
• Predisposed by trauma. Acquired through
dust from dung of infected cattle and
horses and through contaminated water of
ponds.
Clinically
• Most commonly Infects the nasal mucosa.

• Presents as bleeding polyps resembling
strawberry with white dots representing
sporangia.

Histopathology :
• Thick basophilic sporangium containing
basophilic sporangiospore along with
chronic inflammatory cells consisting of
lymphocytes, plasma cells and macrophages
(consistent with Rhinosporidium seeberi).
Treatment
• Complete excision of mass with cutting
diathermy and cauterization of its base and
Dapsone.
