NELSON MANDELA

was born July 18th, 1918 in a small village in Mvezo, South Africa.
He studied Law at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

He died on December 5, 2013.

APARTHEID AND POLITICS

In 1944, Mandela entered politics and joined the African National Congress (ANC) party
in South Africa. The activism of Mandela and the ANC soon collided with apartheid, the
system of racial segregation between blacks and whites that lasted from 1948 to 1994 in
the African country.

"Apartheid determined, based on race, where South Africans could live and work,
the type of education they could receive, and even whether or not they could
vote"
In 1960, after the Sharpeville massacre (in which police forces attacked people protesting
against apartheid, leaving some 250 dead and injured) the South African leader set aside
the premise of non-violence and began to advocate acts of sabotage against the
government.

27 years in prison…
In 1963, Mandela was tried for sabotage, treason and conspiracy. He was sentenced to
life in prison, narrowly escaping the death penalty. He spent 27 years in prison, during
which he became the great symbol of the fight against apartheid, even for the international
community. He was freed in 1990, when the system of racial segregation was
deteriorating.

NOBEL PRIZE AND FIRST PRESIDENT

In 1993, he received the Nobel Peace Prize and, a year later (1994), he became the first
black president of South Africa.
Mandela stepped down as president in 1999, but remained an active voice for peace and
social justice around the world.
