Remove
Valve Camshaft Gear
△ CAUTION △
Do not attempt to disassemble any gear before reading the
scissor gear definitions. Serious personal injury may result if
instructions are not followed.

Engine damage may result if these instructions are not followed.

The lower idler scissor gear, if equipped, must be unloaded during valve camshaft gear
removal. To unload the gear, two of the gear adjusting screws must be backed up enough to
allow the teeth on the scissor gear to align.
Unload the lower idler scissor gear.
NOTE: This step is not required for a gear train with a lower idler gear.
Remove the valve camshaft gear mounting bolt and valve camshaft timing disc.
NOTE: Do not disassemble the camshaft tone ring.

Install the gear puller, Part Number 3163069.

Completely install the valve camshaft gear mounting bolt.
Loosen the screw two turns.
Use the gear puller to remove the valve camshaft gear from the
camshaft nose.

Remove the gear puller.

Do not completely remove the camshaft gear mounting bolt ( 6 / M% (w ' ga
when using the three-jaw puller. The screw serves as a safety —4,0,

stop preventing the gear from slipping out of the tapered nose of
the camshaft.
Remove the mounting bolt, spacer and valve camshaft gear.

Camshaft Idler Gear (Adjustable)

The camshaft idler gear shaft may come off and
be damaged when the camshaft idler gear is
removed.

The lower idler scissor gear, if equipped, must be unloaded during removal of any gear. To unload
the lower idler scissor gear, two of the lower idler scissor gear adjusting screws must be backed
out enough to allow the teeth on the lower idler scissor gear to align.

Remove the retainer, retainer, camshaft idler gear, and idler gear shaft screws.

Upper Idler Gear

The lower idler scissor gear, if equipped, must be unloaded


during removal of any gear. To unload the lower idler scissor
gear, two of the lower idler scissor gear adjusting screws must
be backed out enough to allow the teeth on the lower idler
scissor gear to align.

Unload the lower idler scissor gear.


NOTE: This step is not required for a gear train with a
solid bottom idler gear.
Remove the retainer screws, retainer, upper idler gear, and
spacer/shaft assembly.

Accessory Drive Gear


If equipped, remove the air compressor. Consult

The fuel pump idler gear shaft can come out and be
damaged when the fuel pump idler gear is removed.

The lower idler scissor gear, if equipped, must be unloaded


during removal of any gear. To unload the lower idler scissor
gear, two of the lower idler scissor gear adjusting screws must
be backed up enough to allow the teeth on the lower idler
scissor gear to align.
Unload the lower idler scissor gear.
NOTE: This step is not required for a gear train with a
solid bottom idler gear.
Remove the bolts, retaining plate, shaft, fuel pump idler gear
and thrust bearing.

Lower Idler Scissor Gear

of any gear. To unload the gear, two of the gear adjusting
screws must be backed up enough to allow the teeth on the
scissor gear to align.
Unload the lower idler scissor gear.
Remove the bolts from the idler scissor gear.
Remove the retainer, lower idler scissor gear, shaft and thrust
bearing.

Bottom Solid Idler Gear


Remove the lower idler gear bolts.
Remove the retainer plate, lower idler gear, shaft and thrust
bearing.
Note that the slots in the gear retainer plate face the gear.
