1 GENERAL
1.1 PURPOSE & SCOPE
The purpose of this procedure is to provide the detailed methodology regarding the air blowing activities.
The work steps are analyzed, all hazards identified, and the necessary safety mitigation measures are
defined so that air blowing can be executed in a safe and efficient manner.
The scope covers the cleaning of the piping comprised in the indicated subsystem. The subsystem to be
cleaned is identified and prepared according to mark-ups in enclosed P&IDs.
1.2 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS
Look up in Appendix 1.
User is intended having acknowledged the content related to safety in documents in the reference item no.1 and 4.
Particular attention must be given to safe conditions at blow off point. Any flying object carried by the blown off
air must be contained within the controlled area. As guideline, the blown off air must hit a wooden ply with
minimum thickness of 6 mm and large enough to be securely hold in place. A net must be installed all around
the blow off point to contain any flying object coming out from inside of the pipe.
PSV with valid calibration certificate is installed at compressor delivery for overpressure protection. If the line
design pressure is less than mentioned PSV set pressure at compressor discharge, additional PSV with lower set
point will be used or approved mitigation actions must be considered.

Note-1: In case, during pressure accumulation, we exceed the pressure set for the quick depressurization, the operator must
stop the compressor and then depressurize the line slowly through the sacrificial valve and only when pressure has been
dropped in the range 2 – 2.5 barg, he can snap open the sacrificial valve for air blowing.
Note-2: Not having any previous experience with same line size and same Polyethylene sheet lot, the blasting will be started
with one layer and will proceed by adding a layer at each step. The total number of layers will be to achieve a bursting
pressure between 2 and 2.5 barg, preferring the lower side of the range if this is considered already sufficient for cleaning.
Do not increase blasting pressure at any first indication of line vibration.
In case during pressurization, we exceed the target pressure of the blasting procedure, we must stop the compressor and
de-pressurize the line through available line vents or from the vent at compressor discharge.
4 PREPARATORY WORKS
User is intended having acknowledged related content in reference item no.1. Instruments And Special In-
Line Components to be removed as per table in Appendix 3.
Dry Air supply is provided by Oil-free Air compressor (Atlas Copco PTS 1600) + Air dryer

1 Before starting the blowing activities, ensure that no water has been left inside the subsystem pipes after the
hydrotest, otherwise drain it.
2 Ensure that safe conditions are in place at blow off point location as indicated in the JSA and dedicated PTW which
has been approved.
Ensure that all vent and drain valves are closed and all other BPs are closed for facilitating the air blowing through
3 BP-1 and ensure polyethylene sheets are installed with help of temporary collar flange at BP-01
4 At air injection point IP-01, start the compressor, then gradually open Valve TV-01 and then gradually open TV-02
and pressurize the line until bursting of polyethylene layers, reading the pressure on PG-01.
Adequate Pre-caution will be taken at blowing points. Ensure complete depressurization of the line and the

compressor delivers flow without restrictions.
Keep unrestricted compressor flow for about 1 minute.
6 De-pressurize the line by closing the valves TV-01 and TV-02 on air supply arrangement.
7 After the line de-pressurization, again install the polyethylene sheet at BP-01 with the help of Temporary collar
flange and then raise the pressure until the bursting of the set of Polyethylene layers. Cardboard blasting is
performed at BP-01according to methodology guidelines in paragraph 3.
8 Operator shall repeat actions indicated in the sequence point no. 4 to 7 for minimum four times and more
depending on the length of the line which is blown. As general guideline, the number of quick depressurizations
will be repeated twice after a clean air blow off is detected.
After last depressurization, the dew point of the air from the blow off point shall confirm that no water pockets are

left inside the pipe (dew point at outlet blow off point shall be near the dew point of the air downstream
compressor dryer).
Once cleaning is accepted at BP-01, injecting air from IP-01, let remove the temporary collar flange and install the
10 temporary blind directly on the flange of the pipe to facilitate the air blowing through other BPs.
11 For air blowing at blow points BP-02 to BP-03, Operator shall follow the actions in sequency from point no. 3 to
point no. 09 for each BPs.
12 After accepting the BP-01 to BP-03 ensure that temporary blinds are installed on respective BPs, to facilitate the air
blow through vent, drain and instrument connection points.
13 At air injection point IP-01, start the compressor, then gradually open Valve TV-01 and then gradually open TV-02
and pressurize the line up to 0.5 to 1 barg, reading the pressure on PG-01. And blow the vents and drain and
instrument connection points BP-04 to BP-06 and BP-26.

14 After finishing air injection through IP-01, Remove the air supply arrangement from IP-01 and install at IP-02.
Install temporary blind at IP-01 for protection.
15 For air blowing BP-07, Ensure that all vent and drain are closed and all other BPs are closed for facilitating the air
blowing through BP-07 and ensure polyethylene sheets are installed with help of temporary collar flange at BP-07
16 At air injection point IP-02, start the compressor, then gradually open Valve TV-01 and then gradually open TV-02
and pressurize the line until bursting of polyethylene layers, reading the pressure on PG-01.

Operator shall follow the action in sequence from the point no. 3 to point no.9.
18 Once cleaning is accepted at BP-07, injecting air from IP-02, let remove the temporary collar flange and install the
temporary blind directly on the flange of the pipe to facilitate the air blowing through other BPs.
19 For air blowing at BP-08, Ensure that BP-07 and all other BPs are closed, remove the temporary blind from
Temporary sacrificial valve.
20 At air injection point IP-02, start the compressor, then gradually open Valve TV-01 and then gradually open TV-02
and pressurize the line until 2 barg, reading the pressure on PG-01.
With adequate PPE, the operator will quickly open the sacrificial valve until the complete depressurization of the
21 line and compressor delivers flow without restrictions.
Keep unrestricted compressor flow for about 1 minute.

Close sacrificial valve again and wait until line is pressurized again between 2 and 2.5 barg
23 Operator shall repeat actions indicated in the sequence point no. 20 to 22 for minimum four times and more
depending on the length of the line which is blown. As general guideline, the number of quick depressurizations
will be repeated twice after a clean air blow off is detected.
24 After last depressurization, the dew point of the air from the blow off point shall confirm that no water pockets are
left inside the pipe (dew point at outlet blow off point shall be near the dew point of the air downstream
compressor dryer).
25 Once cleaning is accepted at BP-08, injecting air from IP-02, let remove the sacrificial valve and install the
temporary blind directly on the flange of the pipe to facilitate the air blowing through other BPs.
26 For air blowing at BP-09 Operator shall follow the actions indicated in the sequence from point no. 19 to point
no.25.
27 After accepting the BP-07 to BP-09, ensure that temporary blinds are installed on respective BPs, to facilitate the
air blow through vent, drain and instrument connection points.
28 At air injection point IP-02, start the compressor, then gradually open Valve TV-01 and then gradually open TV-02
and pressurize the line up to 0.5 to 1 barg, reading the pressure on PG-01. And blow the vents and drain and
instrument connection points BP-10 and BP-27 to BP-30.

29 After finishing air injection through IP-02, Remove the air supply arrangement from IP-01 & IP-02 and install at IP-
03. Install temporary blind at IP-01 & IP-02 for protection.
30 For air blowing at blow points BP-11 to BP-16 and BP-20, Operator shall follow the actions in sequency from point
no. 3 to point no. 09 for each BPs.
31 After accepting the BP-11 to BP-16 and BP-20, ensure that temporary blinds are installed on respective BPs, to
facilitate the air blow through vent, drain and instrument connection points.
32 At air injection point IP-03, start the compressor, then gradually open Valve TV-01 and then gradually open TV-
02 and pressurize the line up to 0.5 to 1 barg, reading the pressure on PG-01. And blow the vents and drain and
instrument connection points BP-17 to BP-19 and BP-21 to BP-25 and BP-31 one by one.
33 It is mandatory to close all open ends when flushing or blowing is interrupted or stopped during execution of
cleaning procedure.
34 After acceptance of all the BP, then reinstate the line with final gaskets and according to design. The reinstatement
must be executed as fast as possible to avoid that results of the cleaning are disrupted by adverse environment.

A tightness test should be performed prior to any other testing. The tightness test allows personnel to locate and repair
gross leaks within the system before introducing other testing media at higher pressures, reducing wasted testing media.
A leak test shall be carried out after the reinstatement of the sub-system with the aim to verify grossly the tightness of
every flanged and/or threaded joint. The tightness test shall be carried out at low pressure (maximum 2 - 3 barg).
Once the sub-system has been pressured-up, it shall be hold for one hour and the pressure shall be monitored by an
adequate pressure gauge (pressure range: 0 to 5 barg).
In case of leakage from a welded and/or threaded joint, seal weld, etc., the execution of the Tightness Test shall be
stopped, and the leakage shall be promptly addressed and rectified.
The Tightness Test shall be considered successfully completed in case a pressure drops not higher than 0.5 bar is detected
during one hour.
8 PRESERVATION OF PIPING
After reinstatement and, if applicable, the tightness test, the subsystem is depressurized and kept sealed at ambient
pressure.
