ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING -2 (BSc Civil Engineering)

COMPLEX ENGINEERING PROBLEM- Spring-2024

STATEMENT
Due to tremendous population growth, WASA Multan has decided to construct a new set up of
Waste Stabilization ponds near Chenab River. Together with a new disposal station and a sludge
carrier, this facility will be targeting the North zone and its adjacent areas of Multan City. You
have been appointed by WASA to design this setup to initially treat 100,000 m 3/day of
wastewater with BOD of 400 mg/L and 1x10 8 FC per 100 ml. BOD in effluent must be limited as
per NEQS under the WHO guidelines. The sludge carrier will be a rectangular brick/concrete
lined open channel with a length of 1.5km with a free board of 1m. There is plenty of free land
available for all this setup and environmental health considerations have to be considered due
to scattered local population in near villages.

You have to design the WSP’s keeping in mind the fact that the effluent is expected to be used
for restricted irrigation purpose. You are required to submit physical and geometric designs of a

1. disposal station
2. pumping facilities
3. sludge carrier
4. Stabilization Ponds

Near Chenab River with its Layout for suitable configuration of WSP setup.

Scenario:

At a later stage the provincial government has plans to use the effluent more intensively due to
high stress of crop water requirements in the near Culturable command of the river Chenab. For
this requirement, they are considering to have a series of Maturation Ponds near the Chenab
River. You also have to add the maturation ponds in the design of WSP keeping the fact in mind
that the effluent will be used for unrestricted irrigation purpose in near future. The FC and BOD
in effluent must be limited as per NEQS under the WHO guidelines for unrestricted irrigation.

Questions

 How will the design, configuration and working configuration of WSP setup influence the
treatment of wastewater?
 Will it be possible to manage the unrestricted irrigation? How? Give a detailed
justification for your analysis.
 Will the effluent be able to meet the permissible standards as required by the scenario?
 What measures /suggestions/ remedies will you suggest for ensuring environmental
sustainability and to avoid the health hazards?

Note. You can consult and take necessary data from WASA and utilize NEQS of PEPA. You may
assume suitable values; consult local and national standards/guidelines if required. All relevant
data and other relevant material can be utilized for solving this complex problem.
