Activity #2 On Work, Power, and Energy
Activity #2 On Work, Power, and Energy
Guide Questions:
1. What are work, power and energy?
Work - Work happens when we apply a force to a certain distance and
there must be motion or displacement in the direction of the force. The
work is the product of the force and the displacement Work has only
magnitude and no direction.
Work – Joule / J
Power – Watt = J/s
Energy - Joule
3. How will relate work, power and energy in terms of their units of
measurements?
Work is nothing but the specific energy that is transformed thus the units
of energy and work are the same. Power is the rate of work being done, so
joules per second which is given in watts. Power is the amount of energy
divided by the time it took to use the energy hence its unit is Joules per Second
or J/s. Its unit is the watt, which is one joule per second of energy used. In
short, Work can be defined as transfer of energy, Energy can be defined as the
capacity for doing work.
5. Give 2 examples where you can observe the concept of work, power and
energy in your everyday living.
One instance where I can observe the concept of work, power and energy is
when I’m riding a bike. The bike begins to move when the user moves and turns the
pedals, creating kinetic energy and thermal energy owing to friction between the tires
and the ground which makes the bike move. Another example is when doing work
out and lifting a weight/dumbbell, where the force is equal to the object's weight and
the distance is equal to the shelf's height. Another one is when I’m playing basketball,
when I control the ball, I transfer energy to it. By doing work and transferring energy
on the ball, you can give kinetic energy to the ball or object.
