General specifications
NOTE: The ISB engine features a non-adjusting valve train and injectors. The ISB valvetrain is designed so that no
valve clearance adjustment is required for normal service during the first 150,000 miles. The valve train operates
acceptably within the limits of 0.006” to 0.015” of clearance for the intake valve and 0.015” to 0.030” of clearance for
the exhaust valve.

position of the cam ring on the injection pump.
Timing is controlled by the main piston in the
timing advance mechanism. During the starting
cycle the main piston and cam ring are held in
the return position, which will give the pump a
delayed injection position. This causes injection
to occur at approximately top dead center. The
transfer pressure is delivered to the main piston,
control valve and servo. As engine speed
increases the transfer pressure increases,
causing the piston to move, compressing the
return spring, causing the cam ring follower to
rotate and the injection timing to be in the
advanced position.
The timing control valve pulsation (signal),
activated by the ECM, can be delayed when
energized, venting pressure from the advance
mechanism and allowing the spring to return
allowing the piston to move in the retarded
direction.

GRADES:
1. Always use the torque values listed in the following tables when specific torque values are not
available.
2. Do not use torque values in place of those specified in other sections of this manual.
3. The values in the table are based on the use of lubricated threads.
4. When the Ib-ft value is less than 10, convert the Ib-ft value to lb-in, to obtain better torque with an Ibs-in
torque wrench. Example: 6 Ib-ft are equal to 72 lb-in.
