PIPE FISHING PROCEDURE

WELL DRILLING

Aim.
Provide basic guidelines that allow the proper development of a well, maximizing the safety and efficiency of
personnel, equipment and tools when fishing occurs from the pipe or tools after a sticking procedure, during
the drilling of wells.

Addressed to:
Coordinators, Supervisors, Operators, Auxiliaries.

1. DEFINITION.
It is defined as pipe fishing, at the moment of drilling in which the pipe or a section becomes trapped
in the well, in an attempt to detach it; or a tool remains in the hole and is recovered by means of
Fishing tools (davits) .

2. CONTROL MEASURES.
There are countless maneuvers to perform before reaching the tool joint, as an example in a tool
movement (removal or lowering) of pipe, leaving bars in poor condition outside the 3m string to be
used, you must always check the threads of pin and box pipe, wear of split bars, lubrication of bar
threads, etc.
 Keep the tool count of the controlled well, barrel, string, dead, subtraction to know the exact
depth where the cutting or sticking of the tool occurs in a well, avoiding and reducing losses of
operational time.
 Control the drilling mud in the well at all times, keep the mud decanters clean, change the
formula if necessary.
 Maintain proper maintenance of drilling equipment such as jaws, vises, chuck, derrick, chains,
pulleys, drag cables, pull down and wire line.
 Maintain a constant check of the Wire Line cable, ¼” or 3/16 ” if it has too many joints, change the
cable for a new one, reducing operational time losses to a minimum. Use Napoleon to cut the
cable and use the cable clamping tool on the bar, do not use Stylson wrenches.
 During shift changes, if the equipment has to be stopped for any reason, the column or string
must be raised until the well is protected, due to entrapment after drilling restarts.
 Never leave the mouth of the well open or unprotected during maneuvers where any element
such as keys, clamps, davits may free fall into the well.
 Always keep rescue elements on hand or in a place known to everyone, such as Swich, Taps,
Cutters, Harpoons, Bells, Spiders, Spirals, avoiding loss of operational time.

Fishing males (Taper Tap)

The taps are simple pipe fishing tools, in the upper part with a box connection to
connect to the fishing string, in the lower part of a conical shape with threaded
threads when attached to the pipe, they are screwed with a manual wrench to
give the necessary torque. When this is cut or has prevented the PIN or BOX
threads from being attached inside the well, in order to recover them inside the
well, fishing cores are lowered according to the diameter of the well
HWT,HQ,NQ,BQ etc….

switch
It is a tool widely used in rescues, quickly made, low cost, and highly reliable. It
works on the principle of a cork or corkscrew. It is made according to the types
of rescue. Example: if HQ bars are cut, it is made with an NQ bar with a
spearhead followed by buttons from smallest to largest in the shape of an
ascending spiral to achieve the necessary torque when introduced inside the cut
bar. In 90% of rescues, this type of tool is successful, only in some specific
cases up to 2 Swiches have been left in the well due to the pipes being too
stuck.

Fishing harpoon or Fishbone

Fishing harpoons are used to rescue ¼” and 3/16” wire line cables, cut from the
inside of the drilling tool, they are introduced inside the pipe to extract from the
inside. They can be made of different designs depending on the diameter of the
pipe.

Fishing bell Taps.

The bells are used to retrieve a drill rod or some adapter with a dimension
smaller than that of the hole and, for this reason, are not in the center of the hole.
They can also be used for damaged details which cannot be reached by a fishing
tap.

Spiders
They are used to rescue 3/16” ¾” wire line cable that has been left inside the
pipe or drilling line.

Internal pipe cutter

Connect the cutter to the bars (bar/cutter assembly) that are
They will be used to rescue the trapped bar/Casing. Before starting, the
operation of the cutter must be checked, particularly the indicator valve. For this,

mud is injected under pressure until the blades come out, after which the
pressure will decrease (see pressure gauge). This tells us that the bar or Casing
has been cut. Adjust the pressure release rod by tightening or loosening the bolt
located on the waist of the cutter.
Insert the bar/cutter assembly into the well. Until you reach the point where you
want to cut the bar or Casing, without applying mud pressure and without
rotating.
Start the rotation at low speed (25 RPM) and then apply mud pressure at 200PSI
(check pressure gauge). If you consider it necessary to increase the rotation to
a maximum of 50 RPM. Continue watching the pressure gauge while the cut is
being made: when the indicator drops rapidly, the cut is complete. Disconnect
the pressure, remove the bars/cutter assembly and remove the rescued
bars/Casing from the well.
fishing basket
The fishing basket
The fishing basket is used to recover objects fallen into the well that are difficult
to recover, such as drill bits, jaws, tricone cones.
