OFFSHORE DRILLING

PLATFORM
Offshore Drilling on A Jack Up Rig Platform

This is a top view of an Offshore Drilling Platform.

Tubular steel pipes are seen being laid out before
being used as drill pipes which later on act as the
means to transport hydrocarbons from beneath the
earth to the surface.
The Helipad for passenger helicopter is located close
to the living quarters for easy access and exit.

Neddrill 3, 4, 6, 7 & 9 are the Jackup rig platform used

for offshore drilling.
Whereas Neddrill 1 & 2 are special design and
constructed Drillships that carries all the facilities
needed for drilling operation offshore.
The clear difference between a Drill Platform and a
Production platform are the towering structure called
the Derrick.
The Derrick @ Rig will be used to raise the drilling
pipes before the are being lowered into the drilled
well (refer to drilling videos)
The ship at the bottom is called the Supply ship which
carries supply and equipment from the land based
terminal to the offshore platform and vice versa.

Neddrill 2, is a special design and constructed Drillship

that carries all the facilities needed for drilling
operation offshore.
Due to its mobility, Drillships are now commonly used
for drilling operation offshore.
It can be moved to other locations once the drilling
job is done where and when needed quickly without
much of a problem

Here are its Main Characteristics, facilities and
equipment necessary to carry out drilling operations
offshore
Offshore Drilling Platform

The top photo indicates that drilling operation is

already in the process
This can be seen by the gas flare on the right
where all unwanted and difficult to handle gases
are being burnt because processing these type of
gas can be difficult and expensive
The photo at the bottom is a drilling platform on
a Jack up rig still in the process of preparing itself
for drilling work
The supply ship can be seen delivering supplies
probably drilling equipment and steel tubing for
the before the actual drilling work can commence
Offshore Drilling Platform

The top photo illustrates the drilling operation is

in the process on a Steel Jacket Drilling platform
The other platform besides it is a Semi Subs
which may be providing the accommodation and
storage facilities to the main platform which is
connected to it
The photo at the bottom is another drilling
platform in operation on a Steel jacket platform.
The supply ship or Offshore Service Vessel (OSV)
can be seen close by 24/7 on standby should the
platform needed any assistance or during the
case of emergency

This is the situation in a large oilfield where the

drilling operation is in full process on a Steel Jacket
and Semi Subs Drilling platforms
The supply ship or Offshore Service Vessel (OSV) can
be seen close by 24/7 to each platforms on standby
should the platform needed any assistance or during
the case of emergency
In reality, the weather and sea conditions may not be
as beautiful and sunny as this.
In the North Sea of the UK, during the winter season,
waves can be up to 10m high with temperature can
easily be down to minus zero Celsius..
Offshore Drilling Equipment, Platform and
Operation

This top photo is the fabrication and testing of

Christmas Tree for offshore drilling and
production. In a single equipment there are many
layers of valves to protect offshore facilities and
equipment which include Blow Our
Protection(BOP) system from the surge of sudden
high pressure with the rise of the hydrocarbon.
Bottom left is the construction of offshore
platform decking where the actual works are
performed and equipments are located
Bottom left is the Drilling operation in progress.
The Drillers are called Roughnecks

The construction of offshore platforms are usually
done onshore before it was transported offshore
where the installation and hook ups took place.
The testing and commissioning of offshore facilities
may take years to complete before the actual
operation can actually start.
Offshore Drilling Equipment, Platform and Operation

During its great days in the 80’s, the Brent oilfield is

the largest offshore development and redevelopment
by Shell Expro in the world.
It cost approximately GBP1.3b a to build over 7 years
due to its unique nature and scale.
It utilises the latest state of the art technology in
production and processing of gas as the dominant
product
The upgrading of platform facilities and utilities
system will significantly improve safety and reduces
operating costs
