After an oil or gas field has been discovered, appraised

and found to be commercial, a project team is

established to;

§ Design the most commercial production and export

system
§ Procure and install the facilities

§ Commission the entire system

The design of the facilities is dependent on many factors, the more
important of which are;

§ Reservoir size and characteristics (high productivity index)

§ Size of recoverable reserves

§ Water depth and climatic conditions

§ Number of oil/gas wells

§ Reservoir fluids characteristics

§ Proximity and availability of other installations and export systems

§ Location of marine and helicopter bases (marine, sailing port and airport)

§ Location of pipeline terminals

§ Product specifications
The first decision to be made is generally the type of
installation to be employed;
§ Fixed structure supporting above – sea processes/ well
access facilities
§ Floating production system

§ Subsea production system

The export of oil and gas is also a primary consideration.

The alternatives are;
§ Pipeline to land

§ Offshore loading
The purpose and design of the installation vary
from field and include provision for some or all of
the following facilities;
§ Drilling and workover of wells

§ Access to the reservoir for production, injection

or testing purposes via wells

§ Stabilisation, treatment and export of oil and gas

§ Separation, disposal or injection of produced

water
§ Measurement of produced fluids

§ Accommodation of personnel

§ Utility plant generation, storage and distribution

systems (electricity, plant air, instrument air,
plant water, cooling water, fresh water, fire
water, nitrogen, fuel etc)
-Continued
§ Safety systems for personnel and plant (lifeboats, fire and gas
detection, shutdown valves)
§ Helideck and marine supply facilities
§ Cranes and lifting gear
§ Material storage and transfer facilities

§ Drains, vents and flares

§ Instrumentation, shutdown and control systems
§ Facilities

The operability, maintainability and safety of the above plant and

systems are also of prime importance since they will determine the
number of personnel and the up-time of the plant.
