PUMPING IN
BUILDINGS
DEFINITION:
It is defined as the supply to the consumption points directly from the tank, by
pressure given by a hydropneumatic equipment.
PARTS:
> 1.2.1.-Tanker:
It must have a capacity of 100% of the daily consumption of the building > 1.2.2.-
Pump:
It is generally a ½ or ¾ horsepower electric pump. Except in the case of single-
family homes, the pumping equipment must be installed in duplicate equal to the
maximum demand estimated for the system. Other considerations to take into
account are the following:

Hmm
• Pumps must be selected for a dynamic pumping head at least equal to the maximum pressure in the tank
hydropneumatic.

• Under maximum demand conditions, the pumps will have minimum rest intervals of 10 minutes between
consecutive starts.
ADVANTAGES OF THIS SYSTEM
} It is an economical system, since it is not required to build an elevated tank
> It is easy to install, as it is electric.
} Solve aesthetic problems of the elevated tank
} Adequate pressure is achieved by properly regulating the hydropneumatic
equipment
DISADVANTAGES OF THIS SYSTEM
> When there is a power failure, the water flow is also interrupted.
> There is corrosion of the water pipes, when they are F° G°

TYPES OF PUMPS:
Horizontal centrifugal pumps:
> They are equipment that has the pump transmission shaft
horizontally. They have the advantage of being able to be installed
in a place other than the supply source, which allows them to be
located in dry places, protected from flooding, ventilated, easily
accessible, etc.

P This type of pump should be used in cisterns, surface sources

and reservoirs. Due to its ease of operation and maintenance, it
is appropriate for rural areas. Its low operation and maintenance
cost is an additional advantage

"MMM
Monobloc Pumps:
They are simple devices that form a compact assembly
with their electric motor. They have an integral compact
box, in small sizes, and/or vertically divided in large
sizes. The suction is axial and the discharge is tangential.
■I The small models have a threaded suction and discharge
connection and the larger models have flanges. They
have two closed impellers that can work in series or
parallel. This type of pump is suitable for small
installations, whose power is not greater than 10 HP.

chair pumps
They are somewhat more complicated teams because
they have four different parts:
■ The pump casing, cantilevered to a special support or
chair, which in turn supports the pump shaft

■ An electric motor.
■ A common metal base.
■ An elastic coupling for the shafts.

CHARACTERISTICS FOR PLACING PUMPING EQUIPMENT IN
BUILDINGS:
The pumping equipment of the water distribution systems installed inside the buildings
must be located in environments that satisfy, among others, the following requirements:
Minimum height = 1.6 m Free space around the pump, sufficient for its repair and
removal The equipment that is installed Outside they must be protected from the
elements.
The pumping equipment (Motor and pump) must be installed on concrete foundations
suitable to absorb the vibrations produced in the space, these foundations must remain 15
cm away. At least above floor level. The equipment will be fixed to the foundations with
anchor bolts.
Centrifugal pumps are recommended for pumping water in buildings.
The unions between the pump and the suction and delivery pipes must be of the
universal type.
Except in the case of single-family homes, the pumping equipment must be installed,
maintaining both equipment in proper operations.
The capacity of the pumping equipment equivalent to the
maximum demand of buildings and in no case less than by duplicate
two hours necessary to fill the elevated tank in conditions

must be
In places where electric power is available, it is recommended that the pump be driven
by an induction electric motor duly selected with the characteristics of the pump, in this
case the motors must be for city voltage current.
The motors must have their independent power supply derived

of the control board. The circuits must be equipped with the
The volume of the pressure tank will be calculated based on the flow,
of maximum and minimum pressures and operating characteristics.
• Pumping equipment must be equipped with automatic switches for combined work with
the cistern, elevated tanks, hydropneumatic systems and fire extinguishing.

Hmm
• PUMPING EQUIPMENT PROBLEM:
Determine the pumping head of a pump, knowing that its Hazen and Williams
friction factor is C = 130, la1, length1 of pipe: is L = •500 m,1 paraliuneflow Q = 5 :í
Lt/s, it is also known that the diameter of the pipe is 4” and that its total dynamic
height is Hdt = 20m.
Solution:
friction coefficient C = 130
pipe length is L = 500 m
Flow Q = 5 Lt/s
Total dynamic height — 20m
Replacing:
5
h f = 1.21 x 1010x (500)x(130) x 100-4.87
h f = 2.64

Therefore\

Pumping head = Total dynamic head + the sum of head loss

Pumping head = ^dt+ Zhf

Pumping head = 20 + 2.64

Pumping head = 22.64
