Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 8 Self-Learning Module on Rational

Algebraic Expressions!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.
For the learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 8 Self-Learning Module on Rational

Algebraic Expressions!

This self-learning module was designed to provide you with fun and
meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being
an active learner.

LESSON

From your previous self-learning modules, you have learned special products
and factoring polynomials. Your knowledge on that will help you better understand
the lesson on rational algebraic expressions.

Expressions involving work rate, variation and speed are usually solved using
rational algebraic expressions.

Rational algebraic expression is a quotient of two polynomials where the

𝑃
denominator is not equal to zero. In symbols: , where P and Q are polynomials and
𝑄

Q ≠ 0. When the denominator (Q) is equal to zero, the expression will be undefined
or meaningless.
4 4𝑥 𝑥 2 +2𝑥−35
Some rational algebraic expressions are: , ,
𝑥−2 𝑥 2 −9 3𝑥+4
Find the value of the variable that makes the expression undefined or meaningless.
4
a. if 𝑥 − 2 = 0, then 𝒙 = 𝟐.
𝑥−2
4 4
If 𝑥 = 2, then = = undefined.
2−2 0
Therefore, the value of x = 2 will make the expression meaningless.
4𝑥
b. if 𝑥 2 − 9 = 0, then (𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 − 3) = 0. It implies that 𝒙 = −𝟑 and 𝒙 = 𝟑.
𝑥 2 −9
4(−3) −12 −12
If 𝑥 = −3, then = = = undefined
(−3)2 −9 9−9 0
4(3) 12 12
If 𝑥 = 3, then = = = undefined
(3)2 −9 9−9 0

Therefore, the value of 𝑥 = ±3 will make the expression meaningless.

𝑥 2 +2𝑥−35 −𝟒
c. if 3𝑥 + 4 = 0, then 𝒙=
3𝑥+4 𝟑
−4 2 −4
−4 ( ) +2( )−35
If 𝑥= , then
3

3 3( 3 )+4

−4 2 −4
( ) +2( )−35
3 3
=
−4+4
−4 −4
( )2 +2( )−35
3 3
= = undefined
0
Therefore, the value of x that will make the expression meaningless is -4/3.

𝑥 −2 5𝑥 𝑥2
Not rational algebraic expressions are: , ,
5+𝑥 √2𝑥−1 2𝑥−4

Simplifying Rational Algebraic Expressions

Steps in simplifying rational Algebraic Expressions
1. Factor the numerator and the denominator if possible.
2. Divide the common factors of numerator by the denominator.
3. Rewrite the remaining expressions in the numerator and the denominator.
Note: We can only divide factors but not the terms of the numerator and the
denominator.

Examples: Simplify the following expressions.

45𝑎2 𝑏 45𝑎2 𝑏 15(3)𝑎𝑎𝑏 3𝑎
1) GCF = 15𝑎𝑏 = =
30𝑎𝑏 30𝑎𝑏 15(2)𝑎𝑏 2

2) GCF = 4 = =
12 12 4(3) 3

𝑥 2 +3𝑥+2 𝑥 2 +3𝑥+2
3) GCF = 𝑥 + 1
𝑥 2 −1 𝑥 2 −1
(𝑥+1)(𝑥+2)

WRAP-UP

𝑃
Rational Algebraic Expressions (RAE) is an expression in the form , where
𝑄

P and Q are both polynomials and Q ≠ 0.

To simplify Rational Algebraic Expressions, factor the numerator and the

denominator if possible, then divide the factor of the numerator by the same factor
of the denominator.
