Types of Communicative Styles or

Speech Styles

According to Joos (1968), there are five speech

styles. These are ranked in terms of the
relationship between speaker (or writer) and
listener (or reader) on a level of formality, from
the least formal to the most formal as follow:(1)
intimate, (2) casual, (3) consultative, (4) formal,
and (5) frozen.

1. Intimate – This style is private. It is used in

conversations between people who are very close
and know each other. The language used in this
style may not be shared

– This style occurs between or among

close family members or
individuals.

Example:
having a one-on-one conversation with a loved
one

2. Casual – This style is common among peers

and friends. There is free and easy participation of
both speaker (or writer) and listener (or reader).
Jargon, slang, or the vernacular language are
used.

- This style is used in informal

situations. It is a carefree way of communicating,
and one in which those who know you can easily
understand
or relate to.

Example:
casual conversations with friends, family
members, chats, phone calls and
messages

3. Consultative – This style is the standard one.

Professional or mutually acceptable language is a
must in this style. This speech style uses feedback
and listener participation.

- It is the most operational among

the other styles. Speaker does not usually plan
what he wants to say. Happens in two-way
participation.

Example:
communication between teachers and students,
employers and employees, doctor and patient,
judge and lawyer, or President and his/her
constituents.

4. Formal – This style is used in formal setting

whose aim is to inform, is intended for a captive
audience. It uses formal words and expressions.

- This style requires advance planning

and preparation. Unlike the consultative style,
this is one-way.

Examples:
Sermons by priests and ministers, State of the
Nation Address of the President, formal
speeches, or pronouncements by judges

5. Frozen – This style is “frozen” in time and

remains unchanged. It is generally used in very
formal setting. It does not require any feedback
from the audience.

- It is the most formal communicative

style that is usually used in respectful situation or
formal ceremony.

Examples:
Preamble to the Constitution, Lord’s Prayer, and
Allegiance to country or flag
