CALA CONTEXT

There is a marked social decay in your local area as evidence by the increasing substance abuse amongst the local youth, much of this stems
from the abandoning of the social roles that have been in existence since the pre-colonial state formation on the Zimbabwean plateau. Learners
are therefore tasked to carry out an investigation in their local community on the division of labor between men and women. They are required
to highlight its impact on women and the differences in the division of labour between pre-colonial and modern society.

FACILITATOR’S NOTES

 Teacher to supervise the execution of the CALA


 Teacher to familiarize himself/herself with the marking guide and achievement standards at the end of the CALA and use them to mark
and score the CALA
 Teacher to provide the necessary guidance, where necessary, especially on choice of topic for interview purposes so that objectives are
met
 Where interviews are involved, teacher to ensure that he/she attends the session in order to score the learner (can do this by inviting a
resource person to the class to serve time)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The social organization of pre-colonial societies in Zimbabwe was characterized by division of labor between men and women. In view of this
the learners are tasked to carry out an investigation in their local community on the division of labor between men and women. They are
required to highlight its impact on women and the differences in the division of labour between pre-colonial and modern society.

THE CALA IS IN FOUR PARTS

PART A

Design an Interview Guide including name, age, race and occupation of interviewee.

PART B

Carrying out an interview on how labour is divided between men and women in your community.

PART C

Recording information from the interviews on the division of labour in both the pre-colonial and modern society and its impact on women.

PART D

Analysing the responses from the interviewee and information from the media and writing a report.

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED

In carrying out the CALA marks will be awarded for the following:

 Clearly phrased interview questions


 Accurate recording of responses
 Good oral communication skills
 Identifying five different roles of men and women in both pre-colonial and modern societies in Zimbabwe.
 Describing any six social activities of both men and women in both pre-colonial and modern societies.
 Good organization and presentation of findings (coherence and cohesion)
 Grammatical accuracy.
 Time consciousness.

CALA TIPS

In interviewing, take note of the following:

 Be courteous when interviewing people.


 Find out about their culture and beliefs before interviewing them.
 Be well dressed in your school uniform.
 Obtain a letter from your school introducing you and your task.
 Carry a notebook or a smart phone to record the information or answers to your interview questions.
 When you get to the person you want to interview, greet them, introduce yourself and give them the reason why interviewing them.
