PEOPLE WITH
FATTY LIVER

AMEEN
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a generally
benign disease characterized by excessive deposition of
fatty acids in liver cells. In patients with NAFLD, who are
usually overweight or obese, a low-calorie diet is
recommended. Calorie restrictions of around 500 kcal
per day are usually sufficient, accompanied by weight
losses of more than 5% to reduce steatosis and 7-10%
to reduce inflammation. The most recommended diet
profile in terms of its composition would be the
MEDITERRANEAN DIET (50-60% carbohydrates, 20-
30% fats with a high content of monounsaturated and
omega-3 fatty acids, 20% proteins).

NUTRITIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR PEOPLE WITH NAFLD

As an initial weight loss goal, a decrease

of at least 7% during the first six months is
recommended, at a rate of 0.5-1 kg per
week. Too rapid weight loss could
mobilize fatty acids from adipose tissue to
the liver and worsen steatosis. Various
studies have shown that a loss greater
than or equal to 10% induces high rates of
improvement in comorbidities and liver
lesions.
❖ preferential consumption of extra virgin olive oil (source of
monounsaturated fatty acids)
❖ restrict the intake of carbohydrates with a high glycemic index
(especially restricting the intake of fructose through sugary drinks)
❖ consumption of two or three servings a week of oily fish (source -3) -
nuts (30-40 grams, 3 or four times a week)
❖ coffee (2 or 3 cups a day)
❖ fermented dairy in our diet (due to alteration described in microbiota in
EGHNA)
❖ fresh and seasonal fruit, rich in natural antioxidants and fiber
❖ Moderate/high intensity strength exercises are recommended for 30-
60 minutes, 3-4 times a week and aerobic exercise (walking, running,
swimming, etc.) for 150-200 minutes weekly.
