FREE,
FULL LlVES
FOR THE
CHlLDREN
OF BURMA

Dear friend,
Since 1994, my family and I have worked with refugees and
displaced people from Burma. Their warmth, love and tenacity
have transformed me.
The people of Burma face impossible situations with a
determination to survive. Their idea of survival isnt just to live
until tomorrow: They strive to protect and nurture their family,
faith, community, culture and dignity. Since 1997 more than 3,500
of their villages have been burned down or destroyed by Burma
Army forces. When displaced people move to a new location to
re-establish their farms and homes, they are often pursued and
displaced again and again.
I have hiked through Burmas jungles and met men, women,
and children who, despite the trials and grinding poverty, make the
best of what is left of their material lives. They press on as productive
members of their communities. They inspire singers in their churches.
They encourage teachers to continue teaching at their creek side
schools. They rebuild their communities when they are destroyed.
Many of the ethnic people of Burma simply will not give in to despair.
Consider the girl on the opposite page. She lived in a village
that was originally destroyed in 2006. When I asked the elders of
her village how many times they have had to run for their lives,
the younger men said 12 times. An older gentleman sighed with
stoic resignation and said, More times than I can remember.
I rst met this girl in a ravine hiding place named Mo Po Ko,
deep inside Burma. Though her life is harsh, she patiently does
her chores everyday. She cares for her baby brother, sweeps the
oor of her bamboo hut and plays with free spirited joy before the
sun sets. In the two days I spent in her jungle hide site, she never
stopped smiling.
That little girl embodies everything Partners Relief &
Development stands for. Our vision is to bring free, full lives to the
children of Burma. We seek to see Burmas little girls have the same
freedom from oppression, hunger and violence that yours and mine
do. We seek more than just freedom: Our hope is to see reconciled
communities living in peace throughout all of Burma.
Because of support from people like you, we are able to
provide education and material support to this girl and more than
80,000 other children in Burmas war areas. Because of help from
people like you, this young girl can receive food, medicine and
shelter when her village is attacked by Burma Army forces.
One thing is clear in my faith journey: We cant just wish this
girl Gods blessing and leave. We are compelled to show her what
His love is all about. In this brochure youll get a picture of what that
means to us.
For freedom and fullness in Burma,
Steve Gumaer

RELlEF.
Since 1996, the military
government has displaced more
than one million people and
destroyed 3,500 villages in
North East Burma alone. We help
people in crisis by providing
relief from war and oppression.
This includes food, clothing,
water, medicine, shelter, and
vital survival supplies.
DEVELOPMENT.
The Burma military intentionally destroys education,
health and economic resources in Burma. We provide
long-term solutions to war and poverty by building
health clinics, providing health care training, providing
school supplies for children, paying teacher salaries,
developing agricultural and animal husbandry solutions,
and developing micro-enterprise opportunity.
ADVOCACY.
We speak up for those who cannot speak for them
selves. We teach, publish, and develop partnerships
with other organizations. We are passionate about
telling Burmas story. And we empower people and
communities to do the same.
CARE FOR
CHlLDREN
OF CONFLlCT.
Children often suer the greatest
