The Lord of the Rings is set in Middle-earth, a fictional world created by J.R.R.

Tolkien. The story takes place in the Third Age of Middle-earth's history and
revolves around the quest to destroy the One Ring, a powerful and corrupting
artifact created by the Dark Lord Sauron. The Ring was forged by Sauron's servant,
the Elf-lord Celebrimbor, and imbued with Sauron's power. The hobbit Frodo Baggins
inherits the Ring from Bilbo Baggins and learns it must be taken to the fires of
Mount Doom to be destroyed, or it will allow Sauron to return to power and enslave
all of Middle-earth. Frodo is joined on his perilous journey by a fellowship of
characters including Gandalf the Grey, a powerful wizard; Samwise Gamgee, Frodo's
loyal hobbit servant; Aragorn, a human warrior; Legolas, an Elf; Gimli, a Dwarf;
and Boromir, a human warrior from the land of Gondor. Along the way, they face
numerous challenges and battles against Sauron's armies and minions, ultimately
culminating in a climactic showdown at Mount Doom.
