in small coastal town named Sines around 1460.
In 1498 the Portuguese navigator, Vasco da Gama, was the first
European to reach India by the route around Africa. He could reach Calicut (in India). Essentially it was an exploratory expedition, whose objective was to open the so-called "Spice Route" to India (for the Portuguese). This route allowed the Portuguese to avoid sailing through the hotly contested Mediterranean and through the dangerous Arabian Peninsula. Also , the portugueses will gain access to India's riches—black pepper, cinnamon, and other spices—and provide a reliable sea route.
