APPROVAL OR EQUIVALENCE OF FOREIGN ACADEMIC DEGREES IN SPAIN.

CONVALIDATION OF UNIVERSITY SUBJECTS. RECOGNITION OF TITLES


MEDICAL SPECIALTIES. APPROVAL OF DOCTORATE DEGREES.

I.- GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE APPROVAL AND EQUIVALENCE OF FOREIGN UNIVERSITY


AND NON-UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC DEGREES IN SPAIN:

The homologation of a degree obtained in accordance with the educational system of a country
to a degree from a different educational system is the official recognition of the training
completed in the country of origin, as equivalent to that required to obtain a degree in this
case, Spanish. The homologation of these titles implies the recognition of the academic degree
in question, enabling them to continue studies at another Spanish educational level, where
appropriate, implies the recognition of the effects inherent to the reference Spanish title, in the
case of titles that enable for your exercise.

Validation is the official recognition of the validity for academic purposes of studies carried out
abroad, whether or not they have ended with the obtaining of a degree, with respect to partial
studies of the country that carries out the validation and that allows said studies to continue in
a center of teaching of the country that validates. Its effects are solely academic as they allow
students to continue their studies within the educational system of the other country.

It is reported that the process of Homologation or Equivalence of Titles is the responsibility of


the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training of Spain and not of this Embassy .

However, interested parties may present their applications for homologation and
equivalence of degrees at this Embassy for transmission to Spain .

- PROCESSING PERIOD:

It is recommended to take into consideration that the approval process can take up to more
than 6 months .

- APOSTILLE AND CERTIFIED COPIES OF NICARAGUA DOCUMENTATION FOR APPROVAL,
EQUIVALENCE OR RECOGNIZATION OF TITLES IN SPAIN :

In order to send the documentation to Spain to obtain the homologation, equivalence or


recognition of Nicaraguan titles, you must:

• Apostill the original Nicaraguan title before the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua

The Nicaraguan title apostille does not require any further processing by this Embassy.
• For the apostille of official titles from third countries, interested parties must
Consult the Consulate of the corresponding State.
• Once the original Nicaraguan title has been apostilled, you must proceed to copy it
certified at this Embassy, for whose processing you can consult the Information Sheet
on Certified.

II .- REFERENCE, THROUGH THE EMBASSY OF SPAIN IN NICARAGUA, OF THE REQUEST FOR


APPROVAL OR EQUIVALENCE OF FOREIGN TITLES TO THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, CULTURE
AND SPORTS:

Applications for homologation and equivalence of foreign degrees may be sent, through the
Spanish Embassy in Nicaragua, to the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training of Spain.

For the submission of your file by this Embassy, interested parties must:

• Deliver to the Embassy, during public service hours (Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 1:00),
an open envelope with the documentation requested by the Ministry of Education and
Vocational Training of Spain. You do not need to make an appointment to present the
documents, THERE IS NO COST. At that time you can leave the documents requested as
part of the file, for proper certification.

o You must complete and present the original Homologation Request Form and a copy,
for registration and sealing by the Spanish Embassy.

III .- RECOGNITION OF MEDICAL SPECIALTIES TITLES:

111.1. - GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE RECOGNITION OF MEDICAL SPECIALTIES TITLES:

European Union, regulated in Spain by Royal Decree 459/2010 of April 16 (
https://www.boe.es/boe/dias/2010/ 05/03/pdfs/BOE-A-2010-6960.pdf ) , which is the
responsibility of the Ministry of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare and not of this
Embassy . However, interested parties may present their homologation applications at this
Embassy for transmission to Spain. It should be noted, however, that the processing is faster
if it is carried out directly before the Ministry of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare .

The process of recognition of medical specialties is an essential requirement, although not the
only one, for the corresponding professional practice in Spain.

111.2. - REQUIREMENTS FOR THE APPLICATION FOR RECOGNITION OF FOREIGN MEDICAL


SPECIALTIES TITLES :

The details of the procedure for the process of recognition of foreign medical specialty titles ,
under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Welfare, can be

It is noted that before proceeding with the application for recognition of the medical
specialty, the homologation or equivalence of the corresponding bachelor's degree
(medicine, nursing... etc.) must be obtained from the Ministry of Education, Consumer Affairs
and Social Welfare in accordance with the procedure explained in points II and III of this
Information Sheet.

It should be noted that the applicable legislation (Directive 2005/36/EC, Annex V, section 5.1.2)
strictly requires compliance with the years of specialized training (MIR-type Residency) . For
these purposes, the subspecialties officially recognized by the competent Ministry in Nicaragua
or having another residence in Nicaragua are counted. On the contrary, master's degrees or
university degrees do not count.

SERVICES AND EQUALITY :

The process of recognizing medical specialty degrees obtained in non-member states of the
European Union is the responsibility of the Ministry of Health, Consumer Affairs and Social
Welfare and not of this Embassy .

However, interested parties may present their homologation applications at this Embassy for
transmission to Spain.

For the submission of your file by this Embassy, interested parties must:

Education, Culture and Sports of Spain. NO APPOINTMENT IS REQUIRED AND THERE IS
NO COST .
• The envelope must clearly indicate the sender (name and address of the interested
party) and the recipient.
• You must complete and present the Medical Specialties Title Recognition Form

registration and stamping by the Spanish Embassy.

• Once the Homologation Request Form is registered and sealed, it will be inserted into
the envelope, which will be closed for sending to the Ministry of Education, Consumer
Affairs and Social Welfare.

IV .- APPROVAL OF DOCTORAL DEGREES :

V .1.- GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE APPROVAL OF DOCTORAL DEGREES:

The process of homologation of doctoral degrees is the exclusive responsibility of the


universities in which the degree is intended to be validated. More specifically, the Rectors of
Spanish universities will be competent for the homologation of Spanish doctoral titles and
degrees.

VI .2.- REQUIREMENTS FOR THE APPLICATION FOR APPROVAL OF FOREIGN DOCTORAL


DEGREES IN SPAIN:

The procedure will begin with a request from the interested party, addressed to the Rector of
the University of his choice, accompanied by the documents determined by the criteria
approved by the University Coordination Council .

The granting of the homologation will be accredited by the appropriate credential issued by the
Rector of the University, in accordance with the model determined by the University
Coordination Council, and it will state the foreign title held by the interested party.

Prior to its issuance, the university will notify it to the General Subdirectorate of Titles and
Recognition of Qualifications of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, for the
purposes of its registration in the special section of the National Registry of Titles.

VII .- GENERAL INFORMATION CONVALIDATION OF SUBJECTS FROM FOREIGN ACADEMIC
CENTERS FOR THE CONTINUATION OF UNIVERSITY STUDIES IN SPAIN :

The validation of subjects approved in foreign academic centers implies the recognition of their
equivalence to one or more subjects of the Spanish academic system. The validation of subjects
is necessary to continue Nicaraguan studies in Spain.

Validation is the exclusive responsibility of the Spanish university in which these subjects are
intended to be validated, in accordance with the criteria established by the University
Coordination Council .

This Embassy is not competent to send the corresponding documentation to the University to
which the validation of subjects is requested .

For more information about this validation process, interested parties should contact the
Spanish university where they wish to continue their studies .
