Properly calculating the ventilation of an industrial warehouse is vital to give efficiency to the plant processes, essential for customer satisfaction and
essential to deliver work with guarantee and quality.

PURPOSE OF THIS PUBLICATION:

The intent of this publication is to provide information and at different angles (30° and 45°) and with structural

(NAMM models HL245, HL330, HL345) FIXED DRAINABLE FINS:
These Fins at their lower end have a channel to drain rainwater.
These fins are also fixed at angles of 30° and 45° and through their
channels the water is drained towards the lower part of the Louver,
through the vertical posts, discharging it out through the lower beam.
This minimizes the “Waterfall Effect” that occurs in Louvers with “Non-
Drainable” fins in which rainwater falls, by gravity, from fin to fin.

These fins rotate within the frame of the Louver, in any direction from

minimum area through which air
can pass; This varies depending on the size of the Louver. Only by
comparing the air flow that passes through the free areas of the
Louvers is it possible to make a viable comparison of their
performance. The free area percentage is the calculated free area
divided by the gross area of the Louver and multiplied by 100.
CALCULATIONS
The Free Area is determined by multiplying the sum of the minimum
distances between the intermediate fins (C), plus the distance
between the upper fin and the head (A), plus the distance between the
lower fin and the base (ledge)(B) , by the minimum distance between

PERFORMANCE DATA
THE PRESSURE DROP AND AIR PERFORMANCE OF A LOUVER

The Air Performance of a Louver is determined by the Pressure Drop

that a certain Volume of Air suffers when passing with a certain speed
through the Free Area of said Louver. Both pressure drop and air
volume are established by testing with a conveniently sized Louver
(48” x 48”). To establish the relationship between the Air Volume and the
Pressure Drop, under the AMCA standards, it is necessary to do at least
5 tests, in which amounts equal to the Air Volume are increased, to
obtain the pressure drops. corresponding, which are used to plot the
Louver Performance Graph (See Fig. 6). This is obtained by
graphing the values of the Pressure Drops against the Speed with
which the Volume of Air flows when passing through the Free Area of
the corresponding Louver.

Bird net or mosquito net:
The selected bird net or mosquito net must fulfill its purpose of
preventing birds or insects from entering the interior of the
structure. However, a mosquito net with very tight threads can
alter the Free Area of the louver, in addition to being obstructed
by dust, garbage or debris, which could affect performance.
Painting the fabric or mesh also alters the free area.

fins, their depth, the type of sealant, the torque applied and the speed of the
air through their free area.

DETERMINATION OF PERFORMANCE:
NAMM publishes in its general catalog and makes available to its clients,
graphs of Pressure Drops against air velocity through the free area (see
Figure 6); tables of the corresponding Free Areas (see Table 1); and
graphs showing Water Penetration versus air velocity through the free
area (see Figure 7). System Effects must also be taken into
consideration.

DETERMINATION OF AVAILABLE FREE AREA:

The required free area can be used to obtain the dimensions of the louver
by pressure drop or by water penetration. This is done by comparing the
required free area with the available free areas of the corresponding louver.

The following formula is used to size a louver for a given airflow and
recommended free area velocity. Each louver design has a specific free
area velocity value based on testing.

MIN FREE AREA (FT 2 ) = DESIGN FLOW (PCM) FREE AREA SPEED
RECOMMENDED
The recommended free area velocity for a louver depends on a value,
Pressure Drop or Rainwater Penetration , that is acceptable for the
particular application.

EXAMPLE OF CALCULATION OF THE DIMENSIONS OF A LOUVER

KNOWING THE AIR FLOW AND THE PRESSURE DROP
Determine the dimensions of a louver for an air flow of 12750 Feet3/Min.
and a Pressure Drop of 0.077 inches of water column.

From the graph of Pressure Drop versus Free Area Velocity (Fig.6) we
determine that this Pressure Drop value corresponds to an approximate
Velocity of 752 Feet/Min.

UBER AREA(Feet 2 ) = 16.95 Feet 2

v
' 752 PPM
Therefore, a louver with a minimum of 16.95 Feet of free area is required.
From the Table of free areas of the NAMM HL 345 Louver (Figure 1),
interpolating between 16.30 (84”x60”) and 18.76 (96”x60”) we see that a
88”x60” louver gives us a free area of 17.13 Feet2 that satisfies the design
conditions. Also interpolating between 14.02(36”x120”) and 19.16(48”x120”)
we obtain a free area of 16,949 Feet2 with a 43”x120” louver which would
be another option that would meet the minimum free area condition
required, but that Due to its height it might not be the best option.

ACCESSORIES
The louver accessory is any auxiliary component used to facilitate its
installation, improve its use and function, or any combination of these. Many
of the accessories are independent of the louver, but are connected to it in
the field, or at some stage of its assembly.
Bottom sill and botaguas
The Soleras and Botaguas are separate pieces that adapt to follow the
specific contour of an opening. Its main use in louvers is in order to deflect
and direct certain elements away from the opening. They should also
provide a visual transition between the louver and adjacent structures.
The material and finish of these accessories is usually similar to that of the
louver. Special designs may incorporate these devices as an integral part of
the louver. (See Figure 8)

Page 9
Mosquito Net Fabrics or Bird Netting

They basically serve one purpose: Preventing the entry of

undesirable elements through the louver while still maintaining
maximum air flow. The material of these accessories must be
resistant to corrosion.
Attaching the fabric, or mesh, to the louver can be done in a
variety of ways including: screws, quick-release staples, or
vandal-proof fasteners.
Commercially there is a wide variety of materials in mosquito
netting and bird netting. Some of the most common are listed

VENTILATE (LENGTH, WIDTH and HEIGHT).
2- - CALCULATE THE AIR VOLUME OF THE SPACE TO VENTILATE (LENGTHXWIDTHXHEIGHT) AS THE VOLUME DATA IN THE LOUVER
TABLES ARE IN Feet3 IT IS CONVENIENT TO CONVERT THE DIMENSIONS OF THE BUILDING TO FEET TO FACILITATE
ITS CALCULATION, TO DO THIS, MULTIPLY THE METERS BY 3.28 ( IF THEY GIVE YOU THE VOLUME DATA IN Mts3,
MULTIPLY IT
X 35.32 TO OBTAIN THE VALUE IN Feet 3 ).

3- -DETERMINE IN TABLE 2, CORRESPONDING TO THE RECOMMENDED AIR CHANGES ACCORDING TO THE USE OF THE SPACE TO BE
VENTILATED.
3
4- - OBTAIN THE VOLUME OF AIR PER MINUTE (Feet /Min.) BY DIVIDING THE RESULT OBTAINED IN POINT 2 BETWEEN THE FACTOR IN
TABLE 2 DETERMINED IN POINT 3.
5- - SEARCH IN THE PERFORMANCE TABLES OF THE REQUIRED LOUVER MODEL FOR THE MAXIMUM PERMISSIBLE OR RECOMMENDED
FREE AREA SPEED (Feet/Min.)

60- DIVIDE THE VOLUME OF AIR PER MINUTE (Feet 3 /Min.), OBTAINED IN STEP 4, BETWEEN THE PERMISSIBLE SPEED (Feet/Min.), FOUND IN
STEP 5, TO OBTAIN THE TOTAL FREE AREA OF THE LOUVER OR LOUVERS REQUIRED.
TOTAL FREE AREA = Feet 3 /Min + Feet/Min = Feet 2

70- ACCORDING TO THE CLIENT'S DATA (See STEPS 7a, 7b and 7c) DETERMINE THE DIMENSIONS OF THE LOUVER OR LOUVERS THAT THE
CLIENT REQUIRES.
7a) If the client indicates the number of louvers they need, we must divide the Total Free Area by the number of louvers to obtain the free area of
each one and from the Table of Free Areas of the corresponding louver we determine its dimensions (Width x Height)
7b) If the client does not indicate the number of louvers necessary but indicates some limitation on the Width or Height of the opening, we determine,
according to that limitation, the Width or Height of the louver and referring to the Table of Free Areas of the louver correspondingly, we divide the
Total Free Area by the area of a louver, whose width or height meets the specification given by the client, to obtain the number of necessary
louvers.
7c) If the client indicates the dimensions of the required louver, we divide the Total Free Area by the free area of that louver to obtain the number of
louvers required.

B. From the Free Area Table of the HL445D louver we choose the Width and Height dimensions that give a value equal to or greater than the free
area obtained.
We see that an 84” Width x 36” Height louver meets this specification since its free area is 9.60 Feet2, the free area velocity of this louver is
obtained by dividing the air flow by the area obtained: 10,000 + 9.60 = 1041 PPM (Lower than the maximum recommended for said louver).
C. With this speed we determine the pressure drop of the selected louver using the HL445D Louver Performance Data Graph.

Pressure drop (approx.) at a rate of 1041 PPM = 0.193 inches of water column.

occurs across the counterflow interface, and the orifice coefficient can be
calculated according to the following equation (Kiel and Wilson 1986).

If other openings are available, the air flow through the opening will be

Greater flows per unit area of the openings are obtained when the inlet

equality. Increasing the outlet area over the inlet area (or vice versa)
increases airflow but not in the same proportion as the increase in area.
When the inlet and outlet openings are unequal, use the smaller area in Wind Pressure on the Exterior of a Building
equation E3 and add the increment as determined in the following graph. Thermal Flotation (Chimney Effect)
Heat generated inside buildings rises to the top of the structure. In
buildings where the structure has a significant elevation (of at least
9 meters 2 ) the natural tendency for hot air to rise upward (known
as thermal flotation or stack effect) can generate air movement in
the building. Locating openings at both upper and lower levels

lower levels of the building, hot air is allowed to rise and exit the
structure, drawing cool air through the lower levels of the building.

Location of Openings
In order to take advantage of both wind pressure and the stack effect, gravity

fans are usually used in conjunction with louvers to ventilate the structure.
Graph of the Increase in Flow Caused by the
Excess Area of one Opening over the Other Gravity fans are installed on the roof, since being the highest part of the

the lowest level of the structure provide the air intake portals for the gravity

manual (March 1995)

Also known as “natural ventilation,” gravity ventilation does not require

electrically powered fans to achieve air movement. This ventilation system
is usually used in buildings whose floor plan is open so air conditioning is
not required and where the main reason for ventilation is heat removal or
dilution of contaminants.
Gravity ventilation is achieved by strategically placing openings in the
building to take advantage of prevailing winds and the “stack effect.”

DESIGN OF GENERAL VENTILATION SYSTEMS

Selection and Sizing of a Gravity Fan

Gravity fans should be selected to offer appropriate architectural style, resistance to atmospheric conditions, and appropriate construction and

cost. When designing a gravity ventilation system it is important to consider
a large inlet area. The total free area of the louvers used to allow air entry
must be equal to or greater than the total throat area of the selected gravity
fans. This will allow the fans to operate as designed.
To determine the appropriate size and number of gravity fans, it is
necessary to first calculate the amount of airflow required by the building.
The two most commonly used parameters to determine the airflow required
in a gravity ventilation system are: Heat removal and contaminant dilution.

Once the air volume is known, it is necessary to determine the location of
the gravity fans and air intake openings for the installation of the louvers. It
is prudent to disperse gravity fans over the roof surface to provide uniform
ventilation. In the event that all air intake louvers are located on one side of
the building, the gravity fans should be located on the opposite side of the
building to provide a sweeping effect through the space to be ventilated.

Determining the Size of Gravity Fans Required

dilution)
FAR= • (1) Feet 3 /Min. (PCM)
2. Wind Speed (Due to the fact that most wind speed data are taken at a
height of about 10 meters (33 Feet) above ground level as wind speed
decreases near the ground and with any obstacle, the design wind speed
should be less than that suggested by meteorological data. A good design
value may be half the average wind speed.)

3. Gravity Fan Height Above Neutral Pressure Level (The height above
the neutral pressure level can be assumed to be the distance above the

optimally, the floor-to-ceiling height should not be less
than 9 meters (30 feet).

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DIMENSIONS (BETWEEN LENGTH AND WIDTH)

When selecting the gravity fan we can see that several models will have an equivalent throat area.
When making a throat size decision, keep in mind that selections with a 3:1 or smaller ratio of throat length to throat width will offer better
performance.
(Example: A Gravity Fan with a 36” x 30” throat has a ratio of 1.2:1 which is much less than the maximum acceptable ratio of 3:1, so this would be
an acceptable selection.)

Architectural Louvers

With more than 37 years of experience in the ventilation market, NAMM resolves controversial situations by manufacturing
a solution that meets the aesthetic expectations of architects and the functional needs of construction engineers.

NAMM is the only manufacturer in Mexico of integral façade Louvers, which allow:

■ Between 50% and 70% free area.

■ Low pressure drops.

■ Zero vision inside.

■ Reduce water penetration.

■ Invisible supports that result in a clean and uniform appearance.

Housings for direct expansion equipment, service stairs, installation cubes or simply as decorative elements are some of
the applications that this magnificent engineering solution can solve.

The success of a correct selection of Louvers in each project begins with the establishment of its priorities.

To achieve this, it is necessary to take into account the following variables:

■ Required free area.

■ Pressure drop.

■ Vision Inside.

■ Allowable water penetration.

■ Installation time and cost.

■ Appearance.

■ Cost.
