(NAMM models HL245, HL330, HL345) FIXED DRAINABLE FINS:
These Fins at their lower end have a channel to drain rainwater.
These fins are also fixed at angles of 30° and 45° and through their
channels the water is drained towards the lower part of the Louver,
through the vertical posts, discharging it out through the lower beam.
This minimizes the “Waterfall Effect” that occurs in Louvers with “Non-
Drainable” fins in which rainwater falls, by gravity, from fin to fin.
( NAMM HL445D and HL645D models) ADJUSTABLE FINS:
These fins rotate within the frame of the Louver, in any direction from
the fully open position to the fully closed position. The fins of these
Louvers can be drainable or non-drainable and moved by means of
cranks, levers, motor, etc.
Some of these actuators can be mounted as an integral part of the

STORM FINS:
These fins are specially designed to prevent the entry of rainwater
carried by the wind in relatively adverse weather conditions. These
fins can be arranged in both a vertical and horizontal position.

If air within the structure is to be directed to or from the louver by
means of ducts, an appropriate design must be followed to
RAINWATER PENETRATION evenly distribute the air throughout the active portion of the
louver. With an inappropriately designed doubt, such as placing
an elbow just inside the structure, the velocity through the louver
can vary causing unsatisfactory results.
Bird net or mosquito net:
The selected bird net or mosquito net must fulfill its purpose of
preventing birds or insects from entering the interior of the
structure. However, a mosquito net with very tight threads can
alter the Free Area of the louver, in addition to being obstructed
by dust, garbage or debris, which could affect performance.
Painting the fabric or mesh also alters the free area.

fins, their depth, the type of sealant, the torque applied and the speed of the
air through their free area.
DETERMINATION OF PERFORMANCE:
NAMM publishes in its general catalog and makes available to its clients,
graphs of Pressure Drops against air velocity through the free area (see
Figure 6); tables of the corresponding Free Areas (see Table 1); and
graphs showing Water Penetration versus air velocity through the free
area (see Figure 7). System Effects must also be taken into
consideration.
The following formula is used to size a louver for a given airflow and
recommended free area velocity. Each louver design has a specific free
area velocity value based on testing.
MIN FREE AREA (FT 2 ) = DESIGN FLOW (PCM) FREE AREA SPEED
RECOMMENDED
The recommended free area velocity for a louver depends on a value,
Pressure Drop or Rainwater Penetration , that is acceptable for the
particular application.
From the graph of Pressure Drop versus Free Area Velocity (Fig.6) we
determine that this Pressure Drop value corresponds to an approximate
Velocity of 752 Feet/Min.
ACCESSORIES
The louver accessory is any auxiliary component used to facilitate its
installation, improve its use and function, or any combination of these. Many
of the accessories are independent of the louver, but are connected to it in
the field, or at some stage of its assembly.
Bottom sill and botaguas
The Soleras and Botaguas are separate pieces that adapt to follow the
specific contour of an opening. Its main use in louvers is in order to deflect
and direct certain elements away from the opening. They should also
provide a visual transition between the louver and adjacent structures.
The material and finish of these accessories is usually similar to that of the
louver. Special designs may incorporate these devices as an integral part of
the louver. (See Figure 8)

INSTALLATION METHODS
Louvers are generally installed and secured in place in one of the following
methods:
A) CONCRETE WALLS
Concrete plugs and expansion screws should be used
to secure the louver.
(See figure 11)
B) METALLIC STRUCTURE
Figure 11.- MOUNTING ON CONCRETE WALL
“L” frame (or flanged) louvers bolted to the metal structure are commonly used.

60- DIVIDE THE VOLUME OF AIR PER MINUTE (Feet 3 /Min.), OBTAINED IN STEP 4, BETWEEN THE PERMISSIBLE SPEED (Feet/Min.), FOUND IN
STEP 5, TO OBTAIN THE TOTAL FREE AREA OF THE LOUVER OR LOUVERS REQUIRED.
TOTAL FREE AREA = Feet 3 /Min + Feet/Min = Feet 2
70- ACCORDING TO THE CLIENT'S DATA (See STEPS 7a, 7b and 7c) DETERMINE THE DIMENSIONS OF THE LOUVER OR LOUVERS THAT THE
CLIENT REQUIRES.
7a) If the client indicates the number of louvers they need, we must divide the Total Free Area by the number of louvers to obtain the free area of
each one and from the Table of Free Areas of the corresponding louver we determine its dimensions (Width x Height)
7b) If the client does not indicate the number of louvers necessary but indicates some limitation on the Width or Height of the opening, we determine,
according to that limitation, the Width or Height of the louver and referring to the Table of Free Areas of the louver correspondingly, we divide the
Total Free Area by the area of a louver, whose width or height meets the specification given by the client, to obtain the number of necessary
louvers.
7c) If the client indicates the dimensions of the required louver, we divide the Total Free Area by the free area of that louver to obtain the number of
louvers required.

B. From the Free Area Table of the HL445D louver we choose the Width and Height dimensions that give a value equal to or greater than the free
area obtained.
We see that an 84” Width x 36” Height louver meets this specification since its free area is 9.60 Feet2, the free area velocity of this louver is
obtained by dividing the air flow by the area obtained: 10,000 + 9.60 = 1041 PPM (Lower than the maximum recommended for said louver).
C. With this speed we determine the pressure drop of the selected louver using the HL445D Louver Performance Data Graph.
Pressure drop (approx.) at a rate of 1041 PPM = 0.193 inches of water column.

air from the cold side flows through the lower part of it). Interfacial mixing
occurs across the counterflow interface, and the orifice coefficient can be
calculated according to the following equation (Kiel and Wilson 1986).
C D = 0.40 + 0.0025 (Ti ■ Te) (E4)
If other openings are available, the air flow through the opening will be
unidirectional, and interfacial mixing does not occur, in this case a
discharge coefficient of 0.65 should be used.
Greater flows per unit area of the openings are obtained when the inlet
and outlet areas are equal; equations E3 and E4 are based on this
equality. Increasing the outlet area over the inlet area (or vice versa)
increases airflow but not in the same proportion as the increase in area.
When the inlet and outlet openings are unequal, use the smaller area in Wind Pressure on the Exterior of a Building
equation E3 and add the increment as determined in the following graph. Thermal Flotation (Chimney Effect)
Heat generated inside buildings rises to the top of the structure. In
buildings where the structure has a significant elevation (of at least
9 meters 2 ) the natural tendency for hot air to rise upward (known
as thermal flotation or stack effect) can generate air movement in
the building. Locating openings at both upper and lower levels
lower levels of the building, hot air is allowed to rise and exit the
structure, drawing cool air through the lower levels of the building.

cost. When designing a gravity ventilation system it is important to consider
a large inlet area. The total free area of the louvers used to allow air entry
must be equal to or greater than the total throat area of the selected gravity
fans. This will allow the fans to operate as designed.
To determine the appropriate size and number of gravity fans, it is
necessary to first calculate the amount of airflow required by the building.
The two most commonly used parameters to determine the airflow required
in a gravity ventilation system are: Heat removal and contaminant dilution.
