INVESTIGATE AND EXPRESS THE HISTORICAL MEMORY OF

JANUARY 15, EDUCATOR'S DAY

January 15: Teacher's Day in Venezuela, why is it celebrated today?

In Venezuela, on January 15 of each year, Teacher's Day is celebrated. A date

on which the important work of the country's professionals, educators and
pedagogues is praised and is used to remember great teachers such as Andrés
Bello and Luis Beltrán. Prieto Figueroa, among others.

The origin of this day dates back to January 15, 1932 when the Society of
Primary Instruction Teachers was founded in Caracas with the purpose of
fighting for the dignity and rights of educators. However, it was not until 1936
when the institution convened the First National Convention of Teachers, an
assembly from which the Venezuelan Federation of Teachers emerged.
Notable personalities such as the former first president, Miguel Suniaga,
passed through the foundation; Roberto Martínez Centeno or Luis Beltrán
Prieto Figuero. Since then, the members agreed to conceive an official day
that promoted educational values and respect for these essential figures of
education. This commemoration also coincides with the date on which the
Decree of Public and Compulsory Primary Education was signed, during the
presidency of Antonio Guzmán Blanco in 1870.

Today the rights of teachers as workers are asserted in different events

throughout all Venezuelan cities. A time to celebrate with children, students
and those closest to us, as well as to promote accessible education for all of
them ...

On January 15, 1932, a group of distinguished educators met at the Vargas

school in Caracas to found an organization that would bring them together as a
union for their dignity and in the search for their rights and benefits.

In 1936, they met again to hold the First National Teaching Convention,
becoming the Venezuelan Federation of Primary Education Teachers; The
first elected president was the educator Miguel Suniaga and as general
secretary the well-known teacher Luís Beltrán Prieto Figueroa, future
president of the Society and Minister of Education.

The President of the Republic, Isaías Medina Angarita, decreed on January 13,
1945 the celebration of “Teacher's Day” every January 15 as a permanent
tribute to Venezuelan educators.

Venezuela has produced excellent educators, whose light has given shine to
their achievements that have crossed our borders; They are our teachers, true
heirs of the glories and knowledge of Andrés Bello, Father of American
Grammar, tutor of the boy Simón Bolívar, and Simón Rodríguez, founder of
the Technical Schools in America, who gave the future Liberator the liberal
political and social guidelines through the book El Emilio by Juan Jacobo
Rousseau.

In 1843, the 1st Education Law of Venezuela was issued.

In 1881, the Ministry of Public Instruction was created, today the Ministry for
Popular Power for Education.
The Magna Carta establishes in its Article 102, Chapter VI of the Third Title,
the right to receive our bread of education.

Being an educator carries out a true apostolate, it involves: being patient,

cultured, educated, persevering, responsible, acting with the double aspect of
teaching and citizen formation, in him the vocation and affection for his
worthy profession prevails more than material interests. that she generates;
always respectful of human dignity and faithful defender of human rights

We take some ideas from our leaders, referring to education:

Bolívar said: “Education and public instruction are the surest principle of
general happiness and the most solid basis of the freedom of the people”
likewise:
“A person without education is an incomplete being.”

What message do you want to communicate to Venezuelan

teachers?

First of all, thank you for being exceptional and unconditional people with
your profession, one of the most beautiful that exists... Being a teacher means
beautiful, patient and firm work; be cunning, subtle, strong, resistant and
persevering. And above all it means knowing how to love, and clearly
understanding the influence that can be projected on children.

Being a teacher is transmitting not only knowledge, it is giving love, affection,

support, guidance when children need it.
Teachers are mothers and fathers, doctors, psychologists, nurses, but above all
things we have the most important mission of teaching the man of tomorrow.

Teachers have the great responsibility to educate with love for life, to form
responsible, supportive, respectful individuals who love their country, their
town, their school, their family, their community, we transmit what we feel to
our children, if we are happy we transmit joy.

.
What a challenge teachers have today.

Education is for a specific country, with specific problems, that is why

the main educational challenges that we see are the following: 1.-
Classrooms are running out of educators, education schools have
lowered their enrollment, due to different aspects where we can
highlight Firstly, the salary, which is not in line with the high cost of
basic needs: health, housing, education, food and clothing.
On the other hand, due to the pandemic, the online study modality
brings with it a new challenge for educators such as: communication via
the internet where Venezuela is considered the second country with the
slowest internet, text messaging and the different platforms where
students send their assignments is not good, so many do not arrive
correctly at their destination.
Another important aspect is that the distance information that is taught
does not reach all sectors, since many parents and representatives do not
have the resources, knowledge or pedagogy to help their children carry
out the assigned activities, for example. many children are out of the
school system.
